  Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett announced his recommended $4.56 billion operating budget for fiscal year (FY) 2013 that begins July 1. The budget strategically restores some of the most critical and important services that were cut back dramatically over the past five years as the County faced unprecedented budget challenges.

  County Executive Isiah Leggett recently honored centenarian Claire Halperin at Friendship Heights Community Day.

  Teacher for A Day. County Executive Ike Leggett is no stranger to the classroom, having been a law professor at Howard University. But, he used his skills with a completely new group of students on May 10 when he taught Amy Soldavini’s grade level/advanced English classes at A. Mario Loiederman Middle School in Silver Spring. He had full responsibility for all aspects of classroom operations and activities, including discipline, lesson presentation – and collecting papers at the end of class. This first “Teacher for a Day” program ever presented by the Montgomery County Education Association was part of the National Education Association’s National Teacher Day. It was designed to honor local teachers and acknowledge the crucial role teachers play in making sure every student receives a quality education.

  The Department of Recreation operates seven outdoor swimming pools from May 26 until Labor Day (see Hours of Operation in pdf format). Detailed schedules of recreational swim hours, lessons, swim teams and all other programs are available at each pool. Residents are reminded that during peak times, it may be necessary to halt admission to pools if capacity is reached. Swimmers will be admitted as soon as space becomes available. Maintaining public safety is the priority at all County pools.

  Members of the County’s Commission on Aging (COA) joined County Executive Isiah Leggett, County Councilmember George Leventhal and Department of Recreation Director Gabe Albornoz as the Executive reaffirmed his commitment to a Senior Agenda: Montgomery County As A Community for a Lifetime.
