On such examinations, eligible veterans who score in the highest rating category will receive consideration for employment prior to all non-veteran candidates in the same rating category. Priority consideration for eligible veteran candidates is subject to affirmative action objectives.

  • Be a resident of the State of Maryland for at least five (5) consecutive years preceding the date of application to take a Merit System examination.
  • Have been honorably discharged from any branch of the United States armed services after at least one hundred and eighty (180) days of active military duty.

  • Veterans granted normal retirement from the United States armed services are not eligible for special credit.

To receive consideration for veteran's credit, applicants must submit a completed Request for Veteran's Credit form with each County application for employment. The completed form must be attached to your resume and submitted prior to the closing date of the announced position. Prior to appointment to a Merit System position, eligible veterans will be required to submit a copy of Form DD 214 for verification of military discharge information, and a notarized affidavit for verification of residency status.
