Secondhand smoke is classified as a "known human carcinogen," and is responsible for about 3,400 lung cancer deaths in non-smoking adults in the U.S. each year. So when The Gazette askd, "How far are Montgomery County's overprotective overseers willilng to go?" I say, as far as the county's property line.

Some may find value in Councilwoman Nancy Floreen's proposal to ban smoking on all property the county owns or leases. Few want smokers to light up anywhere; chasing them from public property, to some at least, may seem a noble cause.

Montgomery County Councilmember Nancy Floreen and Fairfax Board of Supervisors Chair Sharon Bulova talk about how their early community activism and the influence of their families led them to devote their lives to public service, why they share a passion for improving the area's transportation opportunities and why their two counties must work together on key issues.  

Federal, state and local governments must work together, and I'm glad to have been invited to be a part of these important conversations.
