SORRT: 2002 Non-Residential Excellence in Recycling Award

1) Business or Individual: 5550 Friendship Boulevard, c/o Insignia, Chevy Chase

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling, business

Reason for being recognized: This property went above and beyond the recycling requirements by establishing a mixed paper recycling program. In 2001, 5550 Friendship Boulevard recycled 57 percent of its waste.

2) Business or Individual: 6101 Executive Boulevard, c/o McShea, Rockville

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling, business

Reason for being recognized: Through tenant education efforts and dedicated staff, this property recycled just over 50 percent of its waste in 2001.

3) Business or Individual: 9055 Comprint Court, c/o Buchanan Partners

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling, business

Reason for being recognized: This property increased their cardboard recycling tonnages by over 2,000 pounds in one year and has exceeded the County’s 50 percent recycling goal by recycling 61 percent of their waste in 2001.

4) Business or Individual: American Occupational Therapy Association

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling, business

Reason for being recognized: Not only did AOTA recycle above the County’s goal by recycling 74 percent in 2001, but they also have established a buy recycled program that includes letterhead and toner cartridges.

5) Business or Individual: American Postal Workers Union Health Plan

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling, business

Reason for being recognized: As in years past, the American Postal Workers Union Health Plan continues to have an excellent recycling program and once again went above and beyond the County’s 50 percent recycling goal by achieving an 80 percent recycling rate for 2001.

6) Business or Individual: American Speech-Language-Hearing Association

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling, business

Reason for being recognized: American Speech-Language-Hearing Association increased their wooden pallet recycling program by more than 2,000 pounds in the last year resulting in a 67 percent recycling rate in 2001.

7) Business or Individual: Balmar Printing, Inc.

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling, business

Reason for being recognized: This business continues to excel in their recycling efforts by recycling 81 percent in 2001. In addition to their large quantity of office paper recycled, Balmar voluntarily recycles scrap metal and plastic wrap.

8) Business or Individual: Bethesda Country Club

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling, business

Reason for being recognized: This business voluntarily recycles kitchen grease and has an aggressive yard trim recycling program. In 2000 they had a 19.2 percent recycling rate and through continued efforts Bethesda Country Club increased their recycling rate to 66 percent in 2001.

9) Business or Individual: The Bureau of National Affairs, Inc.

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling, business

Reason for being recognized: Aside from an excellent recycling program accepting all required materials, this business recycles mixed paper, CD's and wood pallets. They recycled beyond the County's 50 percent goal with an 81 percent recycling rate for 2001.

10) Business or Individual: EU Services

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling, business

Reason for being recognized: This business recycled more office paper than last year and now voluntarily incorporates aluminum printing plates, wood pallets and skids in their recycling program. They recycled beyond the County's 50 percent goal with an 87 percent recycling rate for 2001.

11) Business or Individual: Euro Motorcars

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling, business

Reason for being recognized: This business recycles all required materials as well as auto batteries, aluminum, and used tires. In 2001, they also recycled steel and used oil filters. As a result, Euro Motorcars has achieved an impressive recycling rate of 88 percent in 2001.

12) Business or Individual: Executive Plaza, 6120 Executive Boulevard

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling, business

Reason for being recognized: This business has an excellent paper recycling program including recycling of shredded documents. They surpassed the County's 50 percent goal with a 67 percent recycling rate for 2001.

13) Business or Individual: Expo Design Center, A Home Depot Company

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling, business

Reason for being recognized: Through an excellent cardboard and wooden pallet recycling program, the Expo Design Center recycled an outstanding 91 percent of its waste in 2001.

14) Business or Individual: Food Lion

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling, business

Reason for being recognized: Food Lion has developed a remarkable cardboard recycling program for their Montgomery County facilities, resulting in a 72 percent recycling rate for 2001. In addition to cardboard, Food Lion also has a recycling program in place for wooden pallets, plastic wrap and plastic shopping bags from customers.

15) Business or Individual: Galyan's Trading Company

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling, business

Reason for being recognized: This medium sized business complies with the County's recycling regulations and goes beyond the required materials by including mixed paper and pallet recycling. With bales of cardboard picked up on a regular basis, Galyan's Trading Company surpassed the 50 percent goal with a 59 percent recycling rate for 2001.

16) Business or Individual: Gazette Newspaper

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling, business

Reason for being recognized: The Gazette Newspaper has a superb recycling program in place that captured over 4.3 million pounds of paper in 2001. This resulted in an impressive 92 percent recycling rate that also included voluntary recycling of aluminum plates.

17) Business or Individual: Hewlett-Packard Company

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling, business

Reason for being recognized: This business recycled beyond the County's 50 percent goal with a 79 percent recycling rate for 2001. They increased participation in their voluntary programs, which includes wood pallet and battery recycling.

18) Business or Individual: Howard Hughes Medical Institute

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling, business

Reason for being recognized: In 2000, Howard Hughes Medical Institute had a 24 percent recycling rate. Through increased office paper, cardboard and commingled recycling efforts, they decreased their amount of solid waste disposed resulting in a 57 percent recycling rate for 2001.

19) Business or Individual: Kohl's Department Store #265

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling, business

Reason for being recognized: With an extensive cardboard and plastic wrap recycling program, this Kohl’s store recycled beyond the County's 50 percent goal with an 81 percent recycling rate for 2001.

20) Business or Individual: Kohl's Department Store #315

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling, business

Reason for being recognized: With an extensive cardboard and plastic wrap recycling program, this business exceeded the County's 50 percent goal with an 85 percent recycling rate for 2001.

21) Business or Individual: Lockheed Martin Global Telecommunications

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling, business

Reason for being recognized: In 2000, Lockheed Martin Global Telecommunications had an 18 percent recycling rate. In 2001, they increased their mixed paper and commingled recycling efforts and enhanced their shredded paper program to include 10 times more paper recycling than in 2000. As a result of these efforts, they increased their recycling rate to 54 percent in 2001.

22) Business or Individual: Lockheed Martin Missions Systems

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling, business

Reason for being recognized: Lockheed Martin Mission Systems increased their computer recycling efforts in 2001 and lowered their solid waste generated which resulted in a 59 percent recycling rate for 2001.

23) Business or Individual: Montgomery Community College

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling, business

Reason for being recognized: Montgomery Community College has raised their recycling rate at all campuses from 27 percent in 2000 to 51 percent in 2001. They continue their motor oil and anti-freeze recycling programs, and now voluntarily recycle auto batteries, power supplies, and fluorescent light bulbs as well.

24) Business or Individual: National Institute of Standards and Technology

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling, business

Reason for being recognized: This business recycled 65.3 percent of their waste in 2001. To further their recycling efforts, they have hosted an employee awareness program to educate staff about their program.

25) Business or Individual: Ourisman Honda

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling, business

Reason for being recognized: This business recycled ten times more motor oil and anti-freeze then in 2000, and achieved a 68 percent recycling rate for 2001.

26) Business or Individual: Rockville Center, 255 Rockville Pike

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

Reason for being recognized: Rockville Center had no recycling program at the beginning of 2000. However through the efforts of the property manager, Mr. Cliff Grimes, and through tenant education, the property exceeded the County’s 50 percent recycling goal by recycling 69 percent of its waste in 2001.

27) Business or Individual: Sam's Club #6653

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling, business

Reason for being recognized: Sam’s Club baled over 1.3 million pounds of cardboard in 2001 resulting in a recycling rate of 68 percent.

28) Business or Individual: Sandy Spring Bank

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling, business

Reason for being recognized: Sandy Spring Bank increased their recycling efforts at all of its branches throughout the County. Paper is collected from each branch and combined at their headquarters for recycling. In 2001, Montgomery County Sandy Spring Bank locations recycled an outstanding 96 percent of their waste.

29) Business or Individual: Shoppers Food Warehouse

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling, business

Reason for being recognized: Another fine example of an excellent cardboard recycling program, Shoppers Food Warehouse recycled at a rate of 88 percent in 2001 from all of its Montgomery County locations.

30) Business or Individual: Smith Lithograph

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling, business

Reason for being recognized: Once again, Smith Lithograph has demonstrated its commitment to recycling by recycling 96 percent in 2001. Smith Lithograph has maintained a recycling rate of over 90 percent during the past several years.
