Reason for being recognized: The American Speech-Language-Hearing
Association continues to excel in their recycling efforts. Their 2003
recycling rate was 74.5 percent, an increase from a reported 65 percent
in 2002. In addition to recycling the required materials, ASHA recycles
computers, wood pallets, toner cartridges and fluorescent light bulbs.
ASHA also actively educates its employees and has sponsored a successful
event in which employees were encouraged to turn in their office trash
cans.

Reason for being recognized: Architectural Ceramics recycled

Services, Inc.
Award Type: Excellence in Recycling
Reason for being recognized: Elite Protective Services
has a small office of eight employees. However, these employees collected
their recyclable materials on-site and self-hauled them to a local
recycling processor. Through their hard work and dedication, staff
at Elite Protective Services recycled more than 58 percent in 2003,
up from 55 percent in 2002.

Company
Award Type: Excellence in Recycling
Reason for being recognized: Galyan’s Trading
Company continued to increase their recycling during 2003 and recycled
57 percent of their waste, up from 50 percent in 2002. In addition
to recycling, Galyan’s purchases recycled-content items such
as paper towels and toner cartridges. They also re-use boxes for shipping
out materials.

Reason for being recognized: Grand Billiard Club
started recycling their commingled containers and mixed paper in late
2002. Through the commitment of management, the Club has achieved
a 91 percent recycling rate during 2003.

Real Estate, LLC (Montrose Office Center)

Reason for being recognized: As a property manager,
Hallwood Commercial Real Estate has focused on improving the recycling
at the Montrose Office Center. Their hard work has paid off. After
recycling just 24 percent of their waste in 2002, the recycling rate
jumped to 60 percent in 2003.

Business or Individual: Howard Hughes Medical Institute
Award Type: Excellence in Recycling
Reason for being recognized: Howard Hughes Medical
Institute more than doubled the amount of mixed paper they recycled
in just one year resulting in a 21 percent increase in their recycling
rate from 48 percent in 2002 to almost 70 percent in 2003.

Reason for being recognized: Hughes Network Systems
continues to excel in their recycling activities by recycling 54 percent
of their waste in 2003. In addition to the mandatory items, Hughes
recycles batteries, computer equipment and scrap metal adding up to
266,000 pounds of additional materials.

Business or Individual: Lockheed Martin Corporate Headquarters
Award Type: Excellence in Recycling
Reason for being recognized: Lockheed Martin Corporate
Headquarters’ recycling program continues to soar. In 2001,
the recycling rate at Lockheed Martin was 47 percent. By 2002, their
recycling rate exceeded the County’s 50 percent goal as they
recycled 64 percent of their waste. However, their persistence in
maximizing their recycling activities continued into 2003 as they
recycled almost 71 percent of their waste. Lockheed Martin also recycles
computer equipment and batteries totaling more than 45,000 pounds.

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling
Reason for being recognized: Even though McKesson
BioServices recycled almost 53 percent of their materials in 2002,
they continued to improve in 2003. By reducing the amount of trash
generated and increasing the amount of cardboard designated for recycling,
McKesson BioServices recycled at a rate of 66 percent during 2003.

Reason for being recognized: Students and staff
at the McLean School in Potomac really know how to recycle right.
In 2003, the school recycled 84 percent of their waste, dramatically
higher than the 29 percent recycling rate in 2002.

Reason for being recognized: In 2003, MedImmune,
Inc. achieved the County’s recycling goal by recycling more
than 52 percent of their waste. In addition to the required materials,
staff at MedImmune also recycled telephone books, batteries and toner
cartridges.

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling
Reason for being recognized: For the second year
in a row, the Mother of God School exceeded the County’s recycling
goal and recycled over 64 percent in 2003. Staff and students at the
school have done a tremendous job of recycling all of their office
paper, newspaper and commingled containers. As a result of their efforts,
it is likely that the school will need to order larger recycling containers
as they continue to expand their recycling activities.

Reason for being recognized: The recycling program
at NASD continues to grow year by year. In 2001, NASD recycled 43
percent of their waste increasing to 56 percent in 2001. However,
just exceeding the County’s 50 percent recycling goal wasn’t
enough for NASD as they continued improving their recycling program
during 2003 which resulted in them achieving a recycling rate of just
over 68 percent.

Reason for being recognized: NCR Corporation continues
as a recycling leader in Montgomery County. In just the past three
years, NCR Corporation has increased their recycling rate 12 percent
reaching an overall 66 percent recycling rate in 2003.

Church and School
Award Type: Excellence in Recycling
Reason for being recognized: In 2002, Our Lady of
Lourdes Catholic Church and School recycled just over 50 percent of
their waste, reaching the County’s 50 percent recycling goal.
However, the church and school continued to increase their efforts
during 2003 and as a result, they have recycled more than 62 percent
of their waste.

Reason for being recognized: Positano Ristorante
Italiano is a pioneer among restaurants in Bethesda. After receiving
feedback and education from the County, Positano's enthusiastically
embraced their recycling program and now recycles all of their cardboard
boxes and commingled containers resulting in a recycling rate above
95 percent.

Reason for being recognized: Recycling is a priority
at Printing Images, Inc. In 2003, they recycled more than 423,000
pounds of paper pushing their recycling rate to an amazing 94 percent.

Reason for being recognized: Recycling just 26 percent
of their waste in 2001 was the springboard for Smiths Aerospace ES
– Germantown to improve their recycling efforts. One year later,
they approached the 50 percent goal by recycling 45 percent of their
waste. This did not stop them in their efforts as they continued to
focus in on recycling, and as a result, recycled just under 51 percent
of their waste during 2003.

Reason for being recognized: Spirent Communications achieved the
County’s 50 percent recycling goal in 2003 by recycling 53 percent
of their waste. In addition to the required materials, Spirent also
recycled more than 32,000 pounds of metals.

row, St. Andrew Apostle School has surpassed the County’s 50
percent recycling goal, and in 2003, the school recycled almost 73
percent of their total waste.

Award Type: Excellence in Recycling
Reason for being recognized: Thales Communications
is an example of a most improved recycler. Back in 2001, Thales Communications
recycled at just 15 percent. Achieving the 50 percent goal just one
year later with a 56 percent recycling rate was not enough. Instead,
staff continued their efforts and recycled an amazing 82 percent in
2003, not including the various metals that they recycled as well.

Business or Individual: The Bureau of National Affairs,
Inc.
Award Type: Excellence in Recycling
Reason for being recognized: Achieving the County’s
50 percent recycling goal for three years running continues at the
Bureau of National Affairs. In 2003, 95 percent of their waste was
recycled, up from 93 percent in 2002. They also recycled more than
71,000 pounds of wood pallets, toner cartridges, CD’s and 3.5”
disks.

Business or Individual: Thornton Friends School
Award Type: Excellence in Recycling
Reason for being recognized: Staff and students
at Thornton Friends School in Silver Spring are continuing to maximize
their recycling efforts. Just a few short years ago, there was no
recycling program at the school. However, in conjunction with education
by County staff and leadership of the principal and instructors, the
school implemented a recycling program for the first time in 2002.
Continuing their efforts into 2003, the school recycled 53 percent
of their waste through the dedication of staff and the student body.

- Business or Individual: United States Postal Service (Shady
Grove)
Award Type: Excellence in Recycling
Reason for being recognized: The United States Postal
Service, Shady Grove Road Facility, has consistently been working
to improve their recycling efforts. In addition to collecting recyclable
materials from post offices around the County, the Postal Service
has recycled approximately 90 percent of their waste materials for
the past two years. They also recycle toner cartridges and purchases
paper products made with recycled content.

Reason for being recognized: Increasing their recycling
rate from 37 percent in 2002 to 57 percent in 2003 is a sign of commitment
at WABTEC Railway Electronics. In addition to the required materials,
WABTEC also recycles fluorescent light bulbs, solder and electronic
equipment.

Reason for being recognized: Setting a standard
for grocery stores across the County, Weis Market Store #129 in Damascus
recycles corrugated cardboard boxes as well as plastic wrap. In 2003,
Weis recycled 72 percent of their total waste, up from 68 percent
in 2002.

Reason for being recognized: Westat continues its
excellence in recycling as it has achieved a 50 percent recycling
