Reason for being recognized: After working with
County staff, BD’s Mongolian Barbecue set up a recycling program
to effectively capture all of their commingled containers and cardboard
boxes generated in the kitchen and bar areas. To this date, their
recycling program continues to excel as a result of the dedication
proven by management and employees.

Award Type: Outstanding Achievement, Business
Reason for being recognized: After attending a SORRT
sponsored business recycling seminar and receiving pertinent information
on setting up a recycling program, Home Goods in Rockville quickly
started a recycling program. As a result of their tremendous effort,
the store recycled over 55 percent of their waste in 2003.

Award Type: Outstanding Achievement, Business
Reason for being recognized: When first visited by County staff earlier
in 2003, Mirkin Medical Consultants had no recycling program in place.
However, after learning about recycling, the business quickly implemented
a successful recycling program and now they recycle all of their mixed
paper and commingled materials.

Business or Individual: Montgomery Community College
Award Type: Outstanding Achievement, Business
Reason for being recognized: Montgomery College’s
overall recycling rate for their three campuses in 2003 was 48 percent.
They also established an expanded program in 2003 to push the College’s
recycling rate over 50 percent, with the Germantown campus recycling
76 percent of their waste. In addition to the required materials,
the college recycled over 86,000 pounds of computer equipment as well
as motor oil, antifreeze, batteries, scrap metal and fluorescent light
bulbs.

Reason for being recognized: Negola’s Ark
Animal Hospital has been very responsive when it comes to recycling
compliance. They have set up and expanded their recycling program
in 2003 and integrated recycling into their normal operating procedures.
Not only are they in compliance with the County’s recycling
requirements, but they have excelled in setting up and maintaining
their recycling program.

Award Type: Outstanding Achievement, Business
Reason for being recognized: Oak Chapel School has
taken a proactive approach to their recycling program. In addition
to setting up a mixed paper and commingled materials recycling program,
staff has provided the school with educational materials to further
enhance their message to the staff and students.

(Rockville Service Center)
Award Type: Outstanding Achievement, Business
Reason for being recognized: PEPCO’s Rockville
Service Center has a comprehensive recycling program in place. In
addition to the required materials, PEPCO also recycles scrap cables,
metals, fluorescent light bulbs, motor oil and batteries totaling
almost 785,000 pounds of materials. PEPCO also has an extensive buy
recycled program for office paper, furniture, and other general office
supplies.

- Business or Individual: The Lutheran Church of St. Andrew
Award Type: Outstanding Achievement, Business
Reason for being recognized: St. Andrews Lutheran
Church improved their recycling efforts so much during 2003 that they
had to increase their mixed paper container capacity from two 90-gallon
containers to an 8 cubic yard dumpster. The church expanded their
program to include all classrooms and the thrift shop.

- Business or Individual: St. Martin of Tours Church and
School
Award Type: Outstanding Achievement, Business
Reason for being recognized: In 2002, St. Martin
of Tours Church and School had no official recycling program in place.
However, after implementing a recycling program and through their
hard work and dedication, the school and church achieved a 42 percent
recycling rate in 2003.

Business or Individual: The Frost School
Award Type: Outstanding Achievement, Business
Reason for being recognized: Prior to 2003, The
Frost School had no recycling program. Just one year later, the school
has implemented a successful recycling program. Labeled recycling
bins are found in every classroom and office, and posters and signs
are placed throughout the school to remind everyone about their recycling
program. The fourth and fifth classes are assigned to collect the
recycling from inside the school.
