  3. Business or Individual: The Home Depot, Inc. Store #2560

    Award Type: Outstanding Achievement, Business

The Home Depot in Germantown took the lead in implementing a comprehensive recycling, waste reduction and buying recycled program that will be a model for all Home Depots. An example of their efforts includes replacing wood shipping crates with reusable and recyclable steel tractor crates. In an effort to promote their reuse, recycling and buying recycled program, store employees created a detailed recycling manual which is now distributed to all district stores.

  4. Business or Individual: The Humane Society of the United States

    Award Type: Outstanding Achievement, Business

The Humane Society of the United States took a close look at their recycling efforts and made dramatic improvements. After adding recycling bins in key areas, promoting reuse of paper and packaging materials, utilizing a bulletin board and training sessions for employees and composting leftover food from the staff lunchroom, their recycling rate in 2004 was a remarkable 79 percent.

  5. Business or Individual: Thomas Edison High School

    Award Type: Outstanding Achievement, Business

Not deterred by the lack of funding, staff and the technology students at Thomas Edison High School forged ahead to improve the recycling program at the school. Faced with severe contamination problems with the recycling containers, Mr. Jeff Lowes wrote a proposal for a grant to buy materials to have the technology class make specialized lids for the recycling containers. The building services staff installed the lids, which has resulted in improved recycling success at the school.

  6. Business or Individual: Verizon

    Award Type: Outstanding Achievement, Business

Verizon renewed their commitment to recycling in 2004 and instituted a number of programs to reduce the amount of waste generated by Verizon’s 23 facilities in Montgomery County. In addition to recycling over 4.9 million pounds of materials in 2004, Verizon distributes CD’s of paper directories to businesses with 15 or more employees to reduce the amount of paper directories being printed. In addition, office supplies made with recycled content are utilized throughout the company.
