2005 SORRT Outstanding Achievement in Recycling Award -- Individuals

* Awards given by Solid Waste Services

Awarded to businesses or individuals for outstanding efforts in their recycling, waste reduction, or buying recycled programs

  1. Business or Individual: Jane Barrett (Nabi Biopharmaceuticals)

    Award Type: Outstanding Achievement, Individual

    Ms. Jane Barrett is a believer in recycling and wanted to improve the recycling program at NABI Biopharmaceuticals. Through her steadfast commitment, she provided training and education to all employees and ensured recycling containers were clearly labeled, leading to a recycling rate of 66 percent in 2004, up from 26 percent in 2003.

  2. Business or Individual: Pedro Carrasco (Jones Lang LaSalle)

    Award Type: Outstanding Achievement, Individual

    Mr. Pedro Carrasco serves as the Chief Engineer at 4800 Hampden Lane in Bethesda. When the tenants in the building recycled only 36 percent of their waste in 2003, Mr. Carrasco took the lead and made drastic improvements to the program which resulted in a recycling rate of 87 percent in 2004.

  3. Business or Individual: Jasmine Cheema (International Gem & Jewelry Show, Inc.)

    Award Type: Outstanding Achievement, Individual

    International Gem and Jewelry Show, Inc. had no recycling program in 2003. As a result of the hard work and dedication of Ms. Jasmine Cheemi, the store implemented a comprehensive recycling program in 2004 resulting in a recycling rate of 85 percent.

  4. Business or Individual: Dr. Julius Glee (Fenton Group, LLC)

    Award Type: Outstanding Achievement, Individual

    As a new building owner, Dr. Julius Glee provided recycling bins and on-site education to all of the tenants in his office building. Through his leadership and support, he turned an underperforming recycling program into a success, resulting in a 2004 recycling rate of more than 70 percent.

  5. Business or Individual: Larry Haines (Ridgeview Middle School)

    Award Type: Outstanding Achievement, Individual

    As the former Building Service Manager at Thurgood Marshall Elementary School, Mr. Haines worked closely with the staff, faculty and students to make sure that their school recycled all that they could and maintained an effective program. Mr. Haines is sure to maintain that dedication and ensure that recycling works at Ridgeview Middle School, where he is the new Building Service Manager.

  6. Business or Individual: Linda Holland (PS Business Park)

    As the assistant property manager for PS Business Park, Ms. Linda Holland has shown her commitment to recycling by ensuring that each tenant in the park knows about the recycling program provided to the tenants and about the County's recycling requirements.

  7. Business or Individual: Yvette Moore (St. John's Episcopal School)

    Award Type: Outstanding Achievement, Individual

    St. John’s Episcopal School in Olney had no recycling program in 2002. However, after implementing a recycling program in 2003 which resulted in a 59 percent recycling rate, Ms. Yvette Moore continued to strive for excellence, and through her efforts and dedication, the school recycled 84 percent of their waste in 2004.

  8. Business or Individual: Jeff Page (YMCA Upper Montgomery County)

    Award Type: Outstanding Achievement, Individual

    The YMCA Upper Montgomery County is lucky to have Mr. Jeff Page in charge of their recycling efforts. Mr. Page ensures that all recycling containers in the facility are clearly labeled, trains personnel in the proper recycling procedures, and sends reminder notices to all staff.

  9. Business or Individual: Yannick Tessema, Parkland M.S. Student

    Award Type: Outstanding Achievement, Individual

    Reason for being recognized: Recycling is important to this eighth grade student at Parkland Middle School. Yannick Tessema makes signs, posters and labels so that everyone, staff and students alike, know how to recycle at the school. On their recycling collection day, Yannick says the recycling announcements over the loudspeaker. Because of his efforts, recycling works at Parkland Middle School.

  10. Business or Individual: Jane Thorne, Children’s Center of Damascus

    Award Type: Outstanding Achievement, Individual

    Reason for being recognized: Teaching children at an early age is important. Ms. Jane Thorne teaches and practices the three “R’s”: recycling, reuse and waste reduction to the students at Children’s Center of Damascus and her efforts are paying off. By the time her students enter kindergarten, they are already spreading the word about recycling to their friends and families.

  11. Business or Individual: Stephanie Warlick, Colorworks Promotions

    Award Type: Outstanding Achievement, Individual

    Reason for being recognized: Ms. Stephanie Warlick has taken recycling upon herself at her organization. Ms. Warlick has taken the lead and has set up a recycling program for her business as well as for two other neighboring businesses.

  12. Business or Individual: Thomas Wortman, Montrose West Limited Partnership

    Award Type: Outstanding Achievement, Individual

    Reason for being recognized: Mr. Thomas Wortman is the person who makes sure recycling works for the tenants of 1201 Seven Locks Road. Mr. Wortman actively communicates recycling information to the tenants to make sure that everyone in the building knows how to properly recycle and takes pride in all of his work.
