Excellence in Recycling
Awarded to businesses and organizations that recycled at least 50 percent of their waste generated in 2007.

American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association continues to excel in their recycling efforts. Their 2007 recycling rate was 83 percent, up from 78 percent in 2006.

Asbury Methodist Village. Asbury Methodist Village recycled 53 percent of their waste stream in 2007. To improve awareness among residents and staff, Asbury Methodist Village has introduced their new mascot, the “Green Being”, which promotes recycling and resource conservation.

Barwood Transportation. Recycling 52 percent of their waste in 2007, Barwood Transportation shows that they continue to care for the environment.

The Bureau of National Affairs, Inc. As a publisher of print and electronic news, the Bureau of National Affairs continues to maintain high recycling rates as a result of their exceptional recycling program. The Bureau of National Affairs achieved a 92 percent recycling rate in 2007.

Calvert Group. Recycling 74 percent of their waste in 2007, the Calvert Group remains an environmentally committed company. Their recycling program started in 1984 and they have continuously worked to improve their recycling efforts by raising awareness among employees and recycling other materials such as cell phones, batteries and electronic items.

EU Services. With a recycling rate of 77 percent in 2007, EU Services continues to excel in their recycling efforts. Congratulations, EU Services!

Fitzgerald Auto Malls. In an effort to further improve their recycling efforts, they continue to educate employees and their vendors on the importance of recycling and reducing waste. They have recently added fluorescent light bulbs and toner cartridges to their voluntary recycling efforts. In 2007, Fitzgerald Auto Malls recycled 66 percent of their waste stream.

The Frost School. In 2007, the Frost School recycled 81 percent of their waste. Students take part in the recycling efforts by collecting recyclables and monitoring recycling containers at the school. The staff also contributes by recycling toner cartridges and reusing office supplies.

General Conference Corporation of the Seventh-Day Adventists. In 2006, the General Conference of the General Conference Corporation of the Seventh-Day Adventists wanted to improve their 48 percent recycling rate and approached the Division of Solid Waste Services for waste reduction suggestions. In 2007, they installed hand dryers and switched from using Styrofoam plates to using reusable plate ware. As a result of their waste reduction efforts combined with their recycling program, their overall recycling rate improved to 58 percent in 2007.

Grubb & Ellis Management Services, Inc. With a successful recycling program in place, Grubb & Ellis Management Services recycled 51 percent of their waste stream in 2007. Their recycling program also includes recycling additional materials such as electronics and computer equipment.

Henry M. Jackson Foundation, U.S. Military HIV Research Program. In 2007, the Henry M. Jackson Foundation achieved a recycling rate of 56 percent up from 51 percent in 2006. Their educational efforts include placing business recycling posters by each fax and copy center as well as in kitchen areas to remind and encourage employees to recycle.

Holy Redeemer Church and School. At Holy Redeemer Church and School in Kensington, recycling is an important part of their day to day activities. Teachers and students actively participate in the school’s recycling efforts. In 2007, the school recycled 76 percent of their waste stream.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute. The Howard Hughes Medical Institute continues to excel in their recycling efforts. In 2007, they recycled 60 percent of their waste stream.

Hughes Network Systems. At Hughes Network Systems, recycling containers are placed in convenient locations and are labeled properly to make recycling easy for both employees and visitors. They reuse office materials whenever possible and have contacted other businesses in the area to share best practices in recycling. Hughes Network Systems successfully recycled 57 percent of its waste stream in 2007.

The Humane Society of the United States. With a 59 percent recycling rate, the Humane Society of the United States is always looking for ways to improve and maximize their recycling efforts. In 2007, staff held Earth Day and America Recycles Day celebrations to educate and encourage their fellow employees to recycle. Their celebrations included an electronics recycling drive. They have also implemented several re-use stations for office and packing materials and have included recycling as part of their new employee orientation sessions.

J. Craig Venter Institute. Recycling 56 percent in 2007, the J. Craig Venter Institute continues to show its dedication to recycling. They constantly remind employees about their recycling policies and they conduct annual events that include providing recycling information.

Landon School Corporation. At the Landon School Corporation, recycling is part of the Upper School’s Environmental Science curriculum and is considered a key component of natural resource conservation. The students have taken an active role in the overall recycling efforts by collecting recyclable materials generated around the campus and maintaining appropriate signage. As a result of these efforts, the Landon School Corporation achieved a 59 percent recycling rate in 2007.

Lockheed Martin Information Systems & Global Services. For the second year in a row, Lockheed Martin Information Systems & Global Services recycled more than 50 percent of their overall waste stream. In 2007, they achieved a recycling rate of 67 percent.

Manhattan Imported Cars, Inc. At Manhattan Imported Cars, recycling is part of doing business. They discuss the importance of recycling during their monthly service and parts meetings and encourage all employees to recycle. In 2007, Manhattan Imported Cars achieved a recycling rate of 54 percent.

Montgomery College. Management and staff at Montgomery College continually emphasize the importance of recycling. The college has placed recycling bins for students, faculty and staff at convenient locations throughout its campuses. Overall, the college achieved a recycling rate of 61 percent in 2007, up from 50 percent in 2006.

My Organic Market. With a 76 percent recycling rate, My Organic Market in Rockville has made recycling part of their everyday operations. Through the use of signs, monthly columns in their sales flyer and properly labeled containers, the store constantly reminds staff and customers about the importance of recycling. The store also promotes waste reduction though encouraging the use of reusable bags by applying discounts to customers who bring their own bags.

Northrop Grumman Denro Systems. For the past four years, Northrop Grumman Denro Systems in Gaithersburg have showcased their commitment to the environment by recycling more than 50 percent of their waste stream. In 2007, they achieved an overall recycling rate of 62 percent.

Shapiro & Duncan, Inc. Shapiro and Duncan surpassed the County’s recycling goal in 2007 by recycling 64 percent of their waste stream, a significant increase from their 55 percent recycling rate in 2006.

St. John's Episcopal School & Church. St. John's Episcopal School & Church in Olney has placed high emphasis on recycling. Thanks to a convenient and well organized recycling program, they achieved a recycling rate of 60 percent in 2007.

Strosniders Hardware – Bethesda. As an environmentally conscious business, Strosniders Hardware in Bethesda recycled 70 percent of their waste stream in 2007. Their recycling program also includes other materials such as batteries, motor oil and packing materials.

VR Limited Partnership. The management at VR Limited Partnership has implemented a successful recycling program at 1110 Bonifant Street in Silver Spring. Tenants are well informed and participate actively in the recycling efforts. As a result of the efforts undertaken by VR Limited Partnership and their tenants, the building achieved a 60 percent recycling rate in 2007.
Outstanding Achievement - Business
Awarded to businesses for their outstanding efforts in implementing or improving their recycling, waste reduction or buying recycled programs.

Adega Wine Cellars and Café. Since the inception of their recycling program in 2007, Adega Wine Cellars and Café has been enthusiastic with the County’s recycling efforts. As a business that sells wine bottles for on-site consumption, Adega Wine Cellars and Café has placed recycling containers for commingled materials in convenient and accessible locations for their customers and staff to use.

Bethesda Place, L.P. The tenants at Bethesda Place I and II in downtown Bethesda are well informed of the recycling procedures at their building. Their property manager, Ms. Deborah Low, has ensured that all tenants have a recycling program in place and keeps them informed on Montgomery County’s recycling requirements.

Daly Computers, Inc. With a voluntary recycling rate of 81 percent, Daly Computers, Inc. in Clarksburg has made a commitment to recycle. As an IT infrastructure provider, Daly Computers also recycles all of their defective and unused computer and electronic equipment and has implemented waste reduction techniques such as reusing packing materials and making note pads from scratch paper.

Discovery Communications, LLC. Discovery Communications has greatly improved its recycling program by adding additional recycling containers and signs throughout their building to increase convenience and education for employees. They have also implemented “buying recycled” policies by purchasing paper products made with 100 percent recycled content and 100 percent post-consumer business cards for their U.S. offices. All of these efforts have helped Discovery Communications to achieve a 42 percent recycling rate in 2007, up from 28 percent in 2006.

Euro Motorcars Germantown, Inc. Euro Motorcars in Germantown, has placed high emphasis on recycling and demonstrated their efforts by achieving a 50 percent recycling rate in 2007. Additional materials recycled at their business include tires, motor oil and cleaning solvents.

GenVec, Inc. Located in Gaithersburg, GenVec, Inc. continues to improve their recycling efforts. Staff implemented an effective recycling program coupled with waste reduction techniques. These efforts have helped improve GenVec’s recycling rate from 39 percent in 2006 to 43 percent in 2007.

The German School-Washington, D.C. in Potomac. Staff and students are committed to recycling at the German School campus located in Potomac. A previous award recipient, the German School continues to excel at their recycling efforts by implementing a very comprehensive recycling program.

Lockheed Martin CLE. Recycling remains a priority at Lockheed Martin CLE. With a recycling program that includes other materials such as light bulbs, computers, and batteries, Lockheed Martin CLE recycled 47 percent of their waste stream in 2007.

National 4-H Council. With outstanding educational efforts, the National 4H Council located in Chevy Chase continues to improve their recycling efforts. Management sends out quarterly reminders to staff via e-mail stressing each person's important role in recycling. In addition, they train their cleaning staff monthly on the proper methods to handle recyclable materials and inform all of their new students during orientation sessions about their recycling program.

Potomac Ridge Behavioral Health. Potomac Ridge Behavioral Health continues to excel at their recycling efforts. By regularly educating both staff and students they have succeeded at improving their recycling rate and added new materials to their recycling efforts.

PS Business Parks. As the property manager for several businesses in the Rockville and Gaithersburg area, PS Business Parks has set up a very effective recycling program for their tenants by providing them with recycling requirements as part of their move in package. In addition, PS Business Parks has made every effort to employ janitorial services that follow recycling guidelines to help maintain compliance.

Red Coats, Inc. As a company that provides professional janitorial services to several properties in Montgomery County, Red Coats Inc. has become an advocate of recycling. The company constantly trains their staff on the proper way to handle recyclable materials and makes sure property managers and business owners are aware of Montgomery County’s recycling requirements.

Sight and Sound Support, Inc. As a small company with four employees, Sight and Sound Support, Inc. located in Gaithersburg implemented an outstanding recycling program where employees are well informed, containers are properly labeled and everyone contributes to their recycling efforts.

St. Jude's Catholic School. St. Jude's Catholic School in Rockville has taken a proactive approach to their recycling program. Labeled recycling bins are found in every classroom and office, and posters and signs are placed throughout the school to remind everyone about their recycling program.

Standard Supplies. With a successful recycling program in place, Gaithersburg-based Standard Supplies continued to improve their recycling efforts in 2007 and renewed its commitment towards the environment.

Thai Market. Located in Silver Spring, Thai Market is a small neighborhood market that has consistently maintained a good recycling program. Recycling bins are placed conveniently around the store and the staff actively participates and monitors their recycling containers.

Whole Foods Market. Whole Foods Markets has implemented an amazing recycling program by adding additional recycling containers and signs throughout their stores to increase convenience for employees, staff and customers. Their recycling efforts include a pioneer food composting program, environmental friendly packaging for some of their store items and a no-plastic bag policy which encourages customers to bring their own reusable bags to the store.

Awarded to individuals for their outstanding efforts in implementing or improving their recycling, waste reduction or buying recycled programs.

Gitta Brant- The Feldman ENT Group. Ms. Gitta Brant has coordinated the efforts to set up a recycling program at each one of the Feldman Group offices in the metro area. She oversees the purchase of recycling containers for the kitchen and common areas and has utilized posters and educational materials to raise awareness among employees and staff. She has become a relentless crusader for recycling at her business.

Sherrie Genson- Guardian Realty Management. As a property manager for Guardian Realty Management, Ms. Sherrie Genson re-educates her tenants annually about Montgomery County’s recycling requirements. Ms. Genson often works with the Division of Solid Waste Services to coordinate educational efforts and ensure her tenants are in compliance.

LaTonya Nimmons-VanDyke- National Naval Medical Center. Mrs. LaTonya Nimmons-VanDyke, Environmental Program Manager, continues to strive to improve the recycling program at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda. She actively communicates recycling information to employees and visitors at the hospital to make sure that everyone knows how to recycle properly. Annual events such as the Civilians Career Fair and Earth Day provide additional outreach to the National Naval Medical Center’s community.

Philip North- Starbucks at Gaithersburg Square. Ever since Mr. Philip North became manager of Starbucks at Gaithersburg Square, their recycling program has drastically improved. The staff is knowledgeable about recycling requirements and Mr. North is working to encourage his customers to join in their recycling efforts. He has provided labeled recycling bins in multiple languages for his customers to use and placed educational posters in appropriate locations.

Mark Ramos- Offenbacher's (Gaithersburg). With the help of the Division of Solid Waste Services, Mr. Mark Ramos, property manager, instituted a recycling program at Offenbacher’s in Gaithersburg in 2007. Since the inception of the program, Mr. Ramos has worked to maintain the recycling program and he dutifully monitors the recycling and refuse collection containers to minimize contamination and illegal dumping.

Elisa Rapaport- Nana Designs. Ms. Elisa Rapaport is the engine behind the recycling efforts at Nana Designs located in Wheaton. She is a superb recycler and is always prompt to share recycling information with the staff to make sure everyone is informed about their recycling efforts.

Jacquelyn Waters -Finmarc Management. As the property manager for Old Silo and Piney Branch shopping centers in Silver Spring, Ms. Jacquelyn Waters has been key to maintaining the recycling programs at these two properties. She monitors their recycling programs to ensure compliance and works closely with the Division of Solid Waste Services to keep her tenants informed about recycling requirements and updates.
