Language Labs

Montgomery County Public Libraries has three Language Learning Labs:

All of these Language Labs have computers and computer software to help non English speakers:

  • learn English
  • refine their English pronunciation and listening skills
  • improve their reading speed

Available Software

ELLIS Introduction
Available at Gaithersburg and Wheaton.
Watch, listen to, interact with, and learn from the characters, their family, and friends using English in authentic situations. Choose from 35 lessons on topics such as:

  • shopping
  • using public transportation
  • getting medical attention

Students can stop or repeat a scene, slow down the dialogue, and record their own voices.

ELLIS Master Pronunciation
Available at Gaithersburg and Wheaton.
Students will hear how words sound and see how the sounds are formed with video models. Animated graphics and native language instruction illustrate where to place the tongue, teeth, and lips to pronounce each sound.

Mango Languages
Learn a new language online at your own pace. Emphasis is on conversational language skills in ESL for Spanish, Portuguese and Polish speakers, Spanish, French, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, German, Russian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, and Greek.

Rosetta Stone
Available at all labs
English Level I and II

Tell Me More
Basic-to-advanced online language lessons in English.

About the Gaithersburg Lab

Hours of Service

  • Monday - Thursday: 10 am - 8 pm
  • Friday and Saturday: 10 am - 4 pm
  • Sunday: CLOSED

9 computers are available for adults and children.

No reservations are required; however, ID is needed to sign up to use the computer. There is a 1 hour time limit.

About the Long Branch Lab

Hours of Service

  • Monday - Wednesday: 10 am - 9 pm
  • Thursday: 1 pm - 9 pm
  • Friday - Saturday: 10 am - 5 pm

8 computers are available for adults and children.

No reservations are required, and there is a 2 hour time limit per session.

About the Wheaton Lab

Hours of Service

  • Monday - Wednesday: 10 am - 9 pm
  • Thursday: 1pm -9 pm
  • Friday: 10 am - 5 pm
  • Saturday: 9 am - 5 pm
  • Sunday: CLOSED

6 computers are available for people ages 13 and above.

No reservations are required; however, lab users must first make an appointment at the Information Desk to meet with a volunteer who will give an introduction to the Lab and software.

There is a 2 hour time limit.
