The School Safety Unit has five police officers, a Sergeant, a Lieutenant, and a Captain assigned to the unit. One officer is assigned to each of the six police districts to oversee the safety patrols at their schools. They have monthly meetings with the patrols and provide training for walking and bus patrols. At the end of each school year, usually in May, the county and police department provides a picnic for all safety patrols. The patrol picnic is held at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds during a one week period. Over 6,000 patrols are treated to amusement rides, food and drinks.
School Crossing Guards
The Crossing Guard Program was first organized in 1947, with the appointment of three male crossing guards. By 1950, the unit had increased to thirty and included 18 females. Since that time, the crossing guard unit has grown tremendously and today 178 women and men make up the guard force. The Montgomery County Police Crossing Guards play a vital role in the school traffic safety program by providing safe crossing to and from school for thousands of school children each day throughout the school year. The primary duty of our crossing guards is the safe passage of school children across dangerous roadways and NOT directing traffic in and out of school parking lots.
Safety Patrol Leadership Camp
The Safety Patrol Leadership Camp is an overnight camp held at Summit Lake Camp in Emmittsburg, MD for one week in June and July. Approximately 250 campers attend each week. These campers are the students chosen by the teacher sponsors to be the patrol leaders for the upcoming school year. The campers are schooled in the areas of leadership, running patrol meetings, and minor conflict resolution. The camp features fishing, boating, pool, and craft activities.
