WINTER BASKETBALL
Rising Star Adds League for 5th-Graders
With growing interest by younger players, a new program for just their size.

The Rising Star basketball program is expanding this winter to meet the demand for younger players by creating a new and exciting league for boys and girls entering the fifth grade.

The league will play 10 regular-season games plus a single-elimination postseason tournament. Games will be played mostly on Sundays from 6-9 p.m. at select gyms with a few games on Saturdays from 6-9 p.m. Game sites are to be determined.

Fourth-graders will be allowed to “play up” in the fifth-graders’ league. Third-graders and younger will not be allowed to participate.

Entry fee is $790 per team for Montgomery County teams; $850 per team for non-county teams.

In recent years, the Rising Star League, which was previously for boys and girls from the sixth to eighth grade, included large numbers of fifth-graders “playing up.” But when about 20 teams of younger players comprised the Rising Star program in the 2006-’07 season, then a trial-run summer league proved a success, the decision for creating a league for the fifth-graders was easy.

“We have had multiple inquiries in the past about expanding the Rising Star League and we are now excited to include the fifth-graders in their own division,” said Brad Roos, MCRD recreation specialist for basketball. “We feel that it will add positively to the current league structure that is being offered.”

Rising Star basketball was added as an enhancement to the county's youth basketball program in 1995 and has grown to as many as 240 teams in the winter and 80 teams in the summer. Rising Star was created for players with similar abilities to compete with and against each other with the idea of increased competition leading to increased development.
