Therapeutic Recreation Forum Sept. 6
At Bauer Drive Community Center, a chance for the public and government officials to discuss issues, services and raise community awareness.
Montgomery County Therapeutic Recreation, the County-sponsored program for individuals with disabilities, will hold a community forum Sept. 6 at Bauer Drive Community Center, 7 p.m., marking the first time in more than 10 years the public and TR have gathered to exchange ideas, raise awareness and address issues.
“As recreation therapists, we talk to the parents regularly and we constantly hear ‘why don’t you do this?’ or ‘why can’t we have that?’ ” said Sharon Norcio, recreation specialist for TR. “So we felt like we needed a little more advocacy and to increase awareness of what we do.”
The forum will be held in conjunction with the County’s Commission of People with Disabilities and no shortage of topics is expected. Current and future programming, trends, interests, needs, procedures, transportation and budget are expected to be discussed.
In Fiscal Year 2008, TR will conduct 522 class registrations, 433 for camps, 1,890 for social clubs and 560 for events, aided by 103 summer volunteers.
“The forum is really for the parents and individuals to express their wants and needs and for us to help inform them on how things work at TR, like explaining how the budget process works,” Norcio said.
If you would like an opportunity to express your thoughts and ideas about services and possible future programming, call 240-777-4925 by Sept. 4. Each speaker will be limited to 3 minutes (agencies will be limited to one speaker).
Limited child supervision is provided at no charge.
