Maryland Senior Olympics Underway
Whether you're an individual or team athlete, or you wish to volunteer or help stage an event, the 28th annual state Games is wanting you!

The Maryland Senior Olympics are underway and now is the time for state residents aged 50 and above to get ready for the competition. Mail-in registration for all events has started with the next events being Sept. 6-9 with badminton, lawn bowling, shuffleboard and 10-pin bowling.

The cycling and 5k running events have already been held.

Senior softball in Maryland is some of the best in the country.Almost each week features a Senior Olympics event through the conclusion of the Games at the 33rd Annual Rockville 10k Nov. 2. Individuals or teams have until 30 days before their event to register, or they can pay a late fee and enter if there's still space in the competition. Winners of the Maryland Games also qualify for the 2009 National Senior Games, to be held next summer in San Francisco.

“The Maryland Senior Olympics is one of the best state games in the country, and now that Montgomery County is sponsoring and hosting many of the venues and sports, we hope even more athletes and teams will participate,” said Ted Wroth, MSO executive director.

With 19 sports and 60 events, the Senior Olympics is also seeking helpers, volunteers and officials. “If you have some time and perhaps experience with scoring or officiating, or just want to be a part of the Games, we could use your help,’ Wroth said.“We’re looking for people to help with all facets of the Maryland Senior Olympics—from messengers to runners, timers, judges, scorekeepers, officials, water distributors and more. If you have an interest in a specific sport, or would like to help stage the event, we’d love to hear from you.”
