“Youth art through the Recreation Department is really a great value because we try very hard to keep it affordable and constantly evolving,” said Jeanne Sullivan, recreation specialist who oversees the youth arts program. “We try something new every season, and we really listen to the parents and kids. We listen to their feedback about what interests them.”
For example, this past summer MCRD held arts camps that were very popular. Cartooning was a huge hit, so now it has been added as a class. The same goes for fiber crafts, watercoloring, drawing and clay, along with some jewelry-making classes.
The Fall season is traditionally a great time for taking MCRD youth art classes because there’s more competition for kids’ time and attention with basketball, swimming and dance during the winter months. A big selection of these classes begin in September. Youth arts fall into the age ranges of 4 to 12-14 years old, depending on the class. Most are less than $100 for 6-10 sessions.
Classes are generally small so the instructors can give each kid the attention they need. Some classes are for parent and child so they can be creative together. Family pottery is very popular. Several of the drawing and painting classes in adult art are also available to youngsters.
“Art helps with self-esteem,” Sullivan said. “There’s no right or wrong in art, just pure enjoyment. It’s something any age can enjoy and something you can do at home without expensive materials. Plus, it’s a lifelong pursuit.”
Youth art classes can be found on pages 39-41 of the Fall Guide, with some adult art selections on pages 41-45. Register early because many classes fill quickly. For more information, call 240-7776870.
