Fall 2008 Therapeutic Recreation Programs
Mission Statement The Therapeutic Recreation Team provides accessible leisure, educational and personal development activities for individuals with disabilities through mainstreaming and adaptive programs.
Mainstreaming Opportunities Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to register for programs. To facilitate your inclusion, you may request auxiliary aids and services.
Interpreters, large or braille print, other auxiliary aids or services, or companions must be requested at least 2 weeks prior to the start of the program. Please call 240-777-4925, TTY 240-777-6974, to schedule an intake for accommodations needed.
Companions provide one-to-one assistance to facilitate participation and assimilation into the program. Most companions are volunteers and placements are limited, and are not guaranteed..
Therapeutic Recreation Programs on RecWeb
Therapeutic Recreation Dances For teens and adults, ages 15 and up, with disabilities. DJ, refreshments, and opportunites for socialization. Transportation must be arranged prior to the event, with pick-up at 10:00pm. Bring ID for check in.
A REGISTRATION FORM IS NOW REQUIRED. CLUB MEMBERS CAN REGISTER IN ADVANCE OR BRING COMPLETED FORM AND PAY AT THE DOOR BY CASH OR CHECK.
Cost: $5.00 club members; $7.00 non-club members

Therapeutic Recreation Water Aerobics A class for high school and middle school special education students during the school day. This slow paced aerobics class is done in shallow water. The workout uses water to cushion feet, knees and the back with emphasis placed on cardiovascular conditioning. The program provides life time skills related to exercise and fitness. Students will also gain experience using forms to apply for financial assistance and learning how to register for programs. These skills fit into the goals of school transition programs. Transportation and supervision is provided by each school. Classes are held at the County's Indoor Pools, most lasting between 7 and 9 weeks with an average fee of $48.00 per participant. Contact your child's school if you are interested.
Weekend Adult Social Clubs
Adult clubs are designed to enhance community participation, skill development, and decision-making skills. Activities are detailed in a Calendar of Events that include outings to restaurants, theatres, sporting events, and more! All club participants should have basic money management skills and be able to indicate basic wants and needs. Fall schedule will begin in October.
Active Adults Club Adults, ages 21 and older, with developmental disabilities. 1 staff to 5 participants. Events require members to actively participate in community trips and group activities.
Fall Membership only (October-December) $40
Weekenders Club Adults, ages 21 and older, with learning disabilities. 1 staff to 6 participants. This club serves independent members in group activities that are socially exciting in the community.

Volunteers Needed Support an individual with a disability in a mainstream recreation program. Provide assistance in a Therapeutic Recreation program. Student volunteers are eligible for SSL hours. Training provided. Call the Volunteer Coordinator at 240-777-4925. |
