Working, semi-retired, or retired we realize that your schedule may be a busy one and yet you may want to take the time to try something new in either the day or evening hours SO we are adding a number of new activities to our Program Menu. ALL REQUIRE PRE-REGISTRATION. USE
REGISTRATION FORM IN THE GUIDE.

Try Something New for Free

It’s never too late to try a new activity and recent studies suggest that continuing to learn new skills are important to keeping our minds young and healthy. These are short (1½ to 2 hour) informal talks and/or demonstrations about activities that are available and fun in our area. Come learn about a new activity, learn some new skills and have fun too. Talks are free but preregistration is required.

Strathmore Presents Burt Bacharach on Sunday June 8 at 7:00pm.

You can receive a 10% discount( pay only $55.80 for promenade seating) by registering and paying for the performance at either the Holiday Park or Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center. Checks must be made payable to Strathmore. Limited seats available.

Afternoon Tea at the Mansion at Strathmore

Wednesday June 18 at 1:00pm
The perfect intermission to your day. Tour the mansion and its wonderful exhibits. Listen to the soothing sounds of Jo Morrison on the Celtic harp while enjoying Strathmore’s special blend tea and a light lunch by Restaurant Associates. The gift shop will also be open. Free parking is available on site.

Register and pay at either Holiday Park or Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center for only $18 (a discounted rate of 10%). Checks must be made payable to Strathmore.

Armchair Travel to Northern India Wednesday, July 16, 1:15pm. Tour guides Sandy and Gail Cohen, world travelers extraordinaire, will take us on one of their journeys. Free.

The Big Band Era Wednesdays, August 6, 13, & 20 at 1:15pm. The time when big bands were king. Sample the sounds of Glenn Miller, Harry James, and so many more. Presented by Irv Chamberlain, Music Aficionado. Free.

Art Talk Series with Art Historian Joan Hart

• Tuesday, July 15, 1:15pm, Norman Rockwell A look at the life and work of this 20th-Century American painter. Free.

Annual Tea Party/Fashion Show Friday, June 20, 1:00pm. Have tea and fancy desserts then watch a fine and funny fashion show. (Small fee)

4th Picnic on the 3rd of July Thursday, July 3, 11:30am. Hot dogs off the grill and a hamburger, too. Entertainment by the Good Times Band follows. Lunch reservations necessary. Small fee.

Movie: Little Miss Marker Monday, July 28, 1:00pm. Enjoy a delightful Shirley Temple movie with your grandchild. Free.

Doug Cooke on the Piano Friday, August 8, 1:00pm. "This guy sounds just like Jerry Lee Lewis." Great music, great fun! Free.

Humor Us Tuesday, August 19, 10:30am. Affiliated Sante’ Group sponsors this talk on finding laughter and fun in your life.

A Day at the Races Friday, June13, 10:30am. Enjoy a continental breakfast, entertainment and some special races for our Father’s Day celebration. Reservations required. Fee.

Kids and Grands Thursday, June 26; July 3, 10, 24, 31, 11:00am. Summer camp for seniors: Join in the fun with storytelling, music, dance and laughter with children from our community. Free.

Fabulous Fourth Thursday, July 3, 12:00pm. It’s time to fire up the grill and play outdoor games to celebrate the 4th of July. Reservations required. Fee.

Laser Eye Surgery Thursday, July 17, 11:00am. Understand the advantages and disadvantages of laser techniques. Speaker from Holy Cross Hospital. Free.

Positive Aging Thursday, August 14, 11:00am. What makes some people seem younger than their years? Discover the secret. Free.

Damascus Center

Shuffleboard Monday, June 9, 1:00pm. A Maryland Senior Olympic Event Diane will test your skill in this fun and challenging game.

Annual "Beginning of Summer Picnic" Friday, June 13, noon. Chef Sue will cook Hamburgers and Hot Dogs. Cost is by donation to the nutrition program.

First Fruits Gospel Blue Grass Band Friday, June 13, 1:00pm will entertain.

Ice Cream Social Tuesday, June 17, 1:00pm. DSCSI sponsors this event at 1:00pm in the dinning room. Free.

Montgomery County Senior Day Fair Tuesday, August 12.

Ice Cream Social Tuesday, August 19, 1:00pm. DSCSI sponsors this event again to get you through the dog days of August. Cost is free.

End of Summer Luau Friday, August 22, noon. Chef Sue will be cooking up an island feast. Dress in island attire(optional) and be entertained. Hawaii Five 0 here we come.

Bowie Baysox Baseball game, bingo and buffet lunch in Diamond View Restaurant, where you can also watch the game.

Welcome to the SOAR Program
SOAR is the Recreation Department’s "Senior Outdoor Adventures in Recreation" program. Designed for active adults age 55 and over, each activity requires a substantial amount of walking and/or physical exertion. Participants should be in good physical condition and consult with their physician if they have any concerns before participating. All travel is by motorcoach unless otherwise noted. Interested individuals should call 240-777-4925 to have a SOAR brochure mailed to them as the registration and refund policies vary from those listed elsewhere in this publication
.

Walking Tour of Ladew Topiary Gardens and Mansion in Harford County

See 22 acres of flower gardens, whose crowning glory is the topiary. Plus take a guided tour through the spectacular Ladew Mansion. Lunch included.

Crab Feast Paddlewheel Riverboat Cruise around Baltimore Inner Harbor

Enjoy a two and one half hour cruise and crab feast (included) on a buffet which includes hard shelled crabs, fried chicken, garden salad, dessert, non-alcoholic beverage and more.

Boat Trip to Tangier Island on the Chesapeake Bay

Visit the Fort McHenry National Park and the Inner Harbor in Baltimore

Tour the battle site that inspired Francis Scott Key to write our national anthem. Afterward, enjoy lunch and sightseeing on own at the Baltimore Inner Harbor.

Skipjack Boat Tour on Chesapeake Bay & St. Michaels

Sail on a sloop-rigged skipjack which is used as an oyster dredger. Experience an oyster dredging demonstration and listen to the Captain discuss the Bay’s ecology and the culture of the waterman. Lunch on own and sightsee in St. Michael’s. Wear sneakers, or boat shoes (no slippery soled shoes).

Canoe Trip through the Jug Bay Wildlife Sanctuary

Guided by a Park Naturalist, take a 2-3 hour canoe tour through this 500 acre wildlife sanctuary bordering the Patuxent River in Anne Arundel County. For experienced or less experienced canoeists. Bring a bag lunch.

Boat Tour of Chesapeake Bay Lighthouses

Embark from Tilghman Island aboard a 36-foot former US Navy special operations vessel. Hear a narration of the storied history of the bay and its lighthouses. Lunch on own and sightsee in St. Michaels when not boating.

The listing below is just a sampling of the many health and fitness related programs offered. Check out the closest Senior Center or Neighborhood Senior Program and stop by and see what health and fitness opportunities are there for you.

The exercise and weight room is available for your use at the Damascus, Holiday Park and Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Centers during their hours of operation. You also have access to the exercise and weight room at any community center that has a senior program, during their senior program hours at no cost. If you use the exercise rooms on other days and times, you will have to purchase the regular season pass.

Age 55+ Fitness for Your Health

Outdoor Activities for Active Adults 55 and Older
Explore some of the great natural resources and outdoor activities available in our area with experienced staff from Montgomery County Department of Recreation. With a small group of other active older adults take a new hike, try out a sea kayak or canoe or explore a wild cave. If you are ready for fun and challenging activities one of our trips could be for you. Transportation by County Van or meet us at the site.

Learn some basic skills and safety precautions then try out a rec kayak on a short trip with rec department staff.

Join us for a fun day at the Bay at Sandy Point State Park. Bring a lunch, hang out on the beach, fish, crab, play volleyball, try out a kayak or a wind surfer, or just relax.

55+ Clinics: Introduction to the Weight Room

Group instruction designed for active seniors. Learn weight room etiquette, use of cardiovascular equipment, weight machines and free weights to develop a challenging circuit training routine that you can continue on your own.

You also have access to an exercise and weight room at any community center that has a senior program, during their senior program hours at no cost. If you use the exercise rooms on other days and times at the community centers, you will have to purchase a regular season pass.

Mini Trips/Short Day Excursions

These 4-6 hour trips are available for departure from your local senior center or neighborhood program. Busses for these trips accommodate 20-22 persons per bus. The transportation fee is $7.00 payable to MCRD. This does not include lunch fees, entrance fees or any other additional fees associated with some of these trips. These additional fees are payable, by you, the day of the trip to the appropriate vendor. Since our space is limited, we can’t provide a detailed itinery of each trip in this brochure. Prior to registering, call the senior program site (see page 80) or call our main office at 240-777-4925.

Our busses are wheelchair accessible, but we must know in advance if you require this accommodation, to ensure your space if the trip isn’t already full.
