Young Child Dies in Two-Alarm Fire
Forty Residents Displaced
Montgomery County, MD - - One child has died and several residents of an apartment complex in Montgomery Village have been transported to area hospitals this afternoon following a two-alarm fire. Shortly after 4 pm units from Montgomery County Fire and Rescue were dispatched for the report of a structure fire in the 18200 block of Lost Knife Circle in Montgomery Village, Maryland. While in route, units were provided additional information which included reports of people trapped in the building. First arriving units reported heavy fire and smoke conditions on the second floor and extending to the top floor of the three-story apartment building and requested additional resources.
Upon arrival, MCFRS personnel engaged in several rescues using ground ladders. Over 80 firefighters were dispatched to the scene of the fire. Approximately 20 minutes after arrival on the scene, the bulk of the fire had been extinguished. Ride On buses were provided to provide shelter and a refuge area for occupants and to assist building management.
One adult male, rescued from a balcony, was transported to a local specialty center in serious condition with life-threatening injuries. Additionally, one adult male was transported to a local specialty center with unconfirmed injuries and two children were transported to a local hospital for evaluation and check-ups.
Twelve apartments were affected by the fire and approximately 40 residents have been displaced.
Media staging was at the Command Center at Lost Knife Circle in Montgomery Village, Maryland. Investigators are on the scene to determine origin and cause. Additional updates and information will be released when available.
