Therapeutic Recreation Camps
Camps that are fun, develop positive peer friendships and improve self-esteem are the staple of our Therapeutic Recreation summers at MCR. We offer age-appropriate activities in an exciting, safe and supportive setting. Our theme weeks encourage self-expression in a structured learning environment. Campers attending full-day programs must bring their lunches. TRANSPORTATION: If attending ESY, contact your teen’s school to arrange transportation to camp.
Therapeutic Recreation Camps

Ages 13-21; teens with autism. This camp continues the fun summer experience of Camp Apollo including swimming, crafts, games, and trips into the community. No personal care provided. Staff ratio: 1 staff/4 participants. TRANSPORTATION: If attending ESY, contact your teen's school to arrange transportation to camp. Participants should arrive to camp from ESY by 1:30pm. Parent or guardian must pick up participants at camp by 5:00pm.



Ages 6-12. Children within the autism spectrum. Campers experience community trips that include swimming, nature centers and stream hikes. Activities such as arts and crafts, music and game playing increase social interactions. Camper should follow two step directions, manage own behavior with moderate to minimal staff intervention and ability to make simple choices. No personal care provided. Staff ratio: 1 staff/3 participants. TRANSPORTATION: If attending ESY, contact your child's school to arrange transportation to camp. Parent or guardian must pick up at camp by 5:00pm.



Ages 8-10; youth with learning disabilities, ADD/ADHD and/or mild behavior disabilities. Sports, outdoor games, and swimming keeps campers active. Theme Weeks, board games, crafts and field trips are planned to enhance social skills. Participants are placed in small groups for specific activity time. No personal care provided. Staff ratio: 1 staff / 4 participants.



Ages 11-13; Middle school youth with learning disabilities, ADD/ADHD, HFA, and/or mild behavior disabilities. A transition camp from Camp Big Pines to the TR Summer Teen Center. Games and team building activities to enhance socialization; swimming, special events and local trips fill the schedule. No personal care provided. Staff ratio: 1 staff/4 participants.



Ages 6-12; youth with developmental disabilities. Games, crafts, swimming, local field trips, special events and theme weeks. Staff ratio: 1 staff/4 participants. No personal care provided. TRANSPORTATION: If attending ESY, contact your child's school to arrange transportation to camp. Participants should arrive to camp from ESY by 1:30pm. Parents or guardians must pick up participants at camp by 5:00pm.



Ages 14-21; teens with developmental disabilities. Now 2 week sessions! Daily travel camp to regional parks and recreation facilities, swimming, and canoeing. Trips are designed for active, independent teens and involve a lot of walking and/or exercise. No personal care provided. Staff ratio: 1 staff/4 participants. Transportation: No AM or PM transportation available. Parent or guardian must pick up at camp at 4:00pm.



Ages 5-21. Designed for individuals with severe disabilities. Campers are grouped according to age and ability. Sensory and auditory stimulation, as well as social skills and peer interaction, are emphasized through activities including music, arts and crafts, games and special events. Transportation: Provided by MCPS after camp.



Ages 5-7: Children with learning disabilities, ADD/HD and/or mild behavior disabilities. Creative games, dance movements and swimming keeps campers active. Theme Weeks, arts and crafts, singing and field trips are planned to enhance social skills. Participants are placed in small groups for specific activity time. No personal care provided. Staff ratio: 1 staff / 4 participants.



Ages 13 - 21 with developmental disabilities. Designed for teens who require a low-sensory camp environment. Special theme days, games, crafts, music, and physical activities adapted for group interaction and relaxation. Camp does NOT go swimming, but may have water activities on hot days. Limited personal care provided (i.e. assistance with changing). Staff ratio: 1 staff/4 participants. TRANSPORTATION: If attending ESY, contact your teen's school to arrange transportation to camp for sessions 373887 and 373888. Parent or guardian must pick up participants at camp location by end of camp day.



Ages 13-21; teens with developmental disabilities. This camp offers activities and trips that enhance both socialization and recreational opportunities. Activities include games, crafts, swimming, local field trips, special events and theme weeks. Staff ratio: 1 staff/4 participants. No personal care provided. TRANSPORTATION: If attending ESY, contact your teen's school to arrange transportation to camp. Participants should arrive to camp from ESY by 1:30pm. Parents or guardians must pick up participants at camp by 5:00pm.



Ages 5-18: Youth and teens with physical disabilities; siblings may also apply and will be admitted based on availability of space. Adapted sports, arts and crafts, games, swimming, and theme week activities. Co-sponsored with Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). MCPS transportation and personal care provided. Call 301-657-4959 to receive registration packet. *MCPS registration required.



Ages 5-13; youth with learning disabilities, ADD/ADHD and/or mild behavior disabilities. Sports, games, crafts, and special events extend the summer camp experience from Little Pines, Big Pines and Bullseye. Participants are placed in small groups for specific activity time. No personal care provided. Staff ratio: 1 staff / 4 participants.



Ages 14-21; active, independent teens with developmental disabilities. Now 2 week sessions! Activities to enhance social skills and self-esteem, and promote independence and skills for life. Games, crafts, swimming, wellness activities, and special events featured. No personal care is provided. Staff ratio: 1 staff/4 participants. Transportation: No AM or PM transportation available. Parent or guardian must pick up at camp by 3:30pm.
