Williamsburg Village Stormwater Pond Retrofit
The Williamsburg Village Stormwater Pond is located southwest of the Olney town center, it receives stormwater runoff from 35 acres including the Towne Centre Place Apartments, a portion of the Homeland Village Community, the Olney Shopping Center and associated impervious surfaces such as rooftops, roads, parking lots, etc. This pond was originally constructed in 1983 and is owned by the Housing Opportunities Commission of Montgomery County, it was accepted into the County’s stormwater facility maintenance program in 1986. The Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is responsible for structural maintenance and the owner is responsible for non-structural maintenance such as mowing/vegetative management and trash removal.
DEP determined the Williamsburg Stormwater Pond is well suited for a retrofit project that will improve water quality treatment. The pond is located in a watershed designated as Use III by the Maryland Department of the Environment, meaning increases in water temperature must be kept to a minimum. The project will convert the pond from dry to wet so there will be a permanent pool of water in the pond between storms. The wet pond will maximize water quality treatment while continuing to provide protection of downstream areas from erosion. An underground water storage vault will be included to help minimize the release of warm water from the pond. The side slopes of the new pond will be planted with meadow seed and aquatic plants will be planted around the perimeter of the pond at the water’s edge to enhance habitat and water quality. This project is part of Montgomery County’s ongoing effort to improve water quality in our local streams and in the Chesapeake Bay.
