Renters Tax Credit

Renters who pay high monthly rent relative to their total income may qualify for a tax credit (a check of up to $1,000) paid by the state of Maryland. Application deadline is October 1, 2022.

Qualified renters also automatically receive a 50% matching Montgomery County tax credit to be mailed by the end of March 2023.

  • The application process is brief. Renters can apply online or submit a paper application, with their 2021 tax form and Social Security number. 
  • In 2021, qualified renters who applied received, on average, $466 Renters Tax credit from the state of Maryland and $252 from Montgomery County. 

You might qualify if your household income last year was below a certain amount and you are either age 60+; or you are under age 60 with children under age 18; or you are 100% disabled. 

  • If you are a renter age 60+ or 100% disabled, with 2021 income up to about $73,000 and comparatively high rental costs,  see Chart 1 – Age 60 or Older OR 100% Disabled to learn whether you might qualify. 
  • If you are a renter under age 60 with at least one child under 18 living with you in 2021 and meet a certain 2021 income threshold (e.g., up to $26,500 for a family of four)  see Chart 2 – Under 60 Years of Age to learn whether you might qualify.
