The Vietnam War lasted more than 17 years, ending in 1975. On May 21st, 2018, more than forty years later, Montgomery County Maryland paid homage to those residents who never came home from that war with a special ceremony. Susan Kenedy has the story.

Army SP4 Robert William Abernathy, 20, of Rockville, Maryland. Abernathy was killed in action from multiple fragmentation wounds in Darlac, South Vietnam. He was assigned to the 173rd Airborne Brigade. Gave his life on March 4, 1968. Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall Panel 42E, Line 59. Graduated from Robert E. Peary High School in 1965.

George Robert Andrews

Air Force Capt George Robert Andrews

Air Force Capt George Robert Andrews, 25, of Glen Echo Heights, Maryland. Andrews died while missing after his plane crashed in Kien Tuong Province, South Vietnam when he was protecting South Vietnamese river boats on his second tour of duty. His body was recovered. He was assigned to 615th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 35th Tactical Fighter Wing, 7th Air Force. Gave his life on October 15, 1969. Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall Panel W17, Line 80. Graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in 1961 and from the University of Maryland in 1966 with a degree in engineering.

John Arthur Ansell, Jr.

Army PFC John A. Ansell, Jr., 19, of Bethesda, Maryland. Ansell died while missing after a ground casualty in Thua Thien Province in South Vietnam. His body was recovered. He was assigned to A Company, 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division. Gave his life on May 2, 1968. Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall Panel 53E, Line 44. Attended Northwestern and Bladensburg High School. Awarded a Purple Heart posthumously.

Frederick Allen Barclay

Army SP4 Frederick Allen Barclay, 20, of Silver Spring, Maryland. Barclay was killed in action by small arms fire in Thua Thien, South Vietnam. He was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division. Army SP4 Martin John Begosh, 20, of Rockville, Maryland. Begosh was killed in action as a result of hostile action when his helicopter crashed on land in Hua Nghia, South Vietnam. Army SGT John Anthony Bifareti, Jr., 24, of Rockville, Maryland. Bifareti was killed in action from multiple fragmentation wounds in Binh Duong, South Vietnam. He was assigned to the 14th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division. Gave his life on May 17, 1968. Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall Panel 61E, Line 23. Graduated from high school in Pittsburgh in 1960, and attended the University of Notre Dame.

Harold Douglas Biller

Army SP5 Harold Douglas Biller, 21, of Silver Spring, Maryland. Biller was killed in action when his vehicle hit a land mine near Nui Dat, South Vietnam. He was assigned to 175th Radio Relay Company, 509th Army Security Agency Group. Gave his life on February 25, 1969. Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall Panel 31W – Line 43rd. Graduated from Wheaton High School in 1965, and attended the University of Maryland.

Marine Corps Pvt William Ronald Bissell, 19, of Cabin John, Maryland. Bissel was killed in action from small arms fire while on a patrol in Quang Nam, South Vietnam. He was assigned to Company E, 27th Marines, 1st Marine Division. Gave his life on May 22, 1968. Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall Panel 65E, Line 5. Graduated from Walt Whitman High School in 1966 and served on Cabin John Volunteer Fire Department.

William Joseph Boehm

Army PFC William Joseph Boehm, 19, of Silver Spring, Maryland. Boehm was killed in action from multiple fragmentation wounds in Kontum, South Vietnam. He was assigned to A Company, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade. Gave his life on June 22, 1967. Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall Panel 22E, Line 36. Graduated St. John’s High School in 1965, and attended Montgomery College.

Air Force Capt Robert Newton Brumet, 36, of Bethesda, Maryland. Brumet was killed in air action southwest of Saigon, South Vietnam and died while missing. His body was recovered. He was assigned to 1st Air Commando Squadron, 34th Tactical Group, 13th Air Force. Gave his life on April 9, 1964. Served 16 years in the military.

Graduated from high school in Turkey, and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1961.

Attended Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York.

Edgar J. Rodgers

Edgar J. Rodgers, 61, of Rockville, Maryland. He was a government electrical engineer with the Department of the Navy in Danang, South Vietnam. Gave his life on May 5, 1968. Schooled in New York City and was a Montgomery County resident for 20 years.

Robert Hazen Shields II

Army W01 Robert Hazen Shields II, 26, of Kensington, Maryland. Shields was killed in action in a helicopter crash in Quang Ngai, South Vietnam. He was assigned to the 174th Assault Helicopter Company, 14th Aviation Battalion, 16th Aviation Group, Americal Division. Gave his life on August 15, 1969. Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall Panel 19W, Line 47. Graduated from Walter Johnson High School in 1963 and attended Montgomery College and University of Puget Sound, Tacoma, Washington.

Army PFC Ralph Simon, 21, of Silver Spring, Maryland. Simon was killed in action from multiple fragmentation wounds from a grenade in South Vietnam. Army CPT Milton F. Smith, 25, of Chevy Chase, Maryland. Smith was killed in action in a non-hostile plane crash in South Vietnam. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 52nd Aviation Brigade, 17th Aviation Group, 1st Aviation Brigade. Gave his life on November 11, 1966.

Air Force Capt Victor Arlon Smith, 25, of Silver Spring, Maryland. Smith was killed when his plane crashed due to enemy fire in Loas. His body was not recovered. He was assigned to 390th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 366th Tactical Fighter Wing, 7th Air Force. Gave his life on January 17, 1969. Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall Panel 34W, Line 29.
