Abandoned Property
Abandoned or unclaimed property is property (mainly money) that the government owed you but you never collected. It can also be funds left in an account at a bank, credit union, pension, or other source.
Consumers should beware: scammers pretend to be from the government and offer to send you your abandoned money for a fee. Real government agencies will not call you about your abandoned money, so if you get one of these calls, hang up! You may also receive solicitations to "help" you recover lost money. Just remember, you can conduct your own searches and the local government will instruct you on how to request a refund.
In Maryland, you can search for abandoned property in your name by visiting the Comptroller’s website.
