Commercial Vehicle Inspection

Through education and enforcement, the mission of the Commercial Motor Vehicle Unit is to promote and encourage the maintenance and safe operation of commercial vehicles in Montgomery County and to ensure that all drivers and commercial motor vehicles being operated in Montgomery County are in compliance with all safety regulations set forth by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and Maryland state laws.

The unit consists of a centralized and decentralized team of highly trained police officers.  Centralized inspectors are assigned to the Commercial Motor Vehicle Unit in the Traffic Division, and decentralized inspectors are officers assigned to various units throughout the department.  Officers are certified by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and Maryland State Police to conduct North American Roadside Inspections, Hazardous Materials inspections, Cargo Tank inspections, Motor Coach (Bus) inspections, and weights and measurements enforcement.  Officers also assist with the investigation of collisions involving commercial motor vehicles and conduct education efforts with the motor carrier community.
