Message Routing Unit (MRU)

The Message Routing Unit consists of the Message Routing Center (MRC) and the Telephone Reporting Unit (TRU), which is staffed 24 hours a day/7 days a week. The unit is responsible for communicating with internal and external law enforcement agencies as well as documenting crimes and events that do not require an immediate police response.

Criteria for Telephone Reporting: 

  • The crime must have occurred in Montgomery County Maryland or if the location is unknown, the victim must be a county resident
  • Suspect is not on the scene, is unknown, and no suspect information exists that makes them identifiable
  • Dollar values must be under $10,000 (except Stolen Vehicle)
  • Does not involve a Firearm/BB or Pellet Gun or a Passport

To file a report, please call our non-emergency phone number (301) 279-8000 which is staffed 24 hours a day including holidays and weekends. The following are examples of reports that can be taken over the telephone:

  • Harrassment
  • Fraud (including credit card, identity theft, check fraud, scam)
  • Stolen Vehicle
  • Theft of Bicycle
  • Theft from an Motor Vehicle
  • Theft of Auto Parts
  • Theft from a Building
  • Vandalism
  • Threats
  • Follow Up (the original call had to have been taken by MRU)
  • Lost Property (no passports-this information can be taken at one of the district police stations)
