Warrant Control Unit

The Warrant Control Unit operates 24 hours 7 days per week and is responsible for ensuring the quality of information contained in various Federal, State, and local law enforcement databases. The unit is also responsible for processing warrants received from the Montgomery County District Courts, located in Rockville and Silver Spring. Processing warrants includes researching the identity, criminal history and possible location of wanted individuals and working closely with the Montgomery County Police Fugitive Unit as well as jurisdictions nationwide for apprehension. Arrest warrants and bench warrants give law enforcement officers the right to arrest on site and enter homes to apprehend wanted subjects if necessary.

What is a warrant?

An arrest warrant is a legal document signed by a commissioner that enables law enforcement officers to make an immediate arrest based on a crime that occurred and evidence that the wanted person was involved. An arrest warrant has no statute of limitation or expiration date.

bench warrant is a legal document issued by a judge when an individual is in contempt of court for various reasons including failure to appear, violation of probation, and failure to pay a fine. A bench warrant has no statute of limitation or expiration date.

What should I do if I have an active warrant?

Bring a valid form of identification with you and report to any Montgomery County Police District Station to turn yourself in immediately. You could also make an appointment to turn yourself in by contacting the Warrant Control Unit at 240-773-5360. After 30 days of the issuance of the warrant, the wanted subject's name will be turned over to the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA). This will prevent you from renewing your license or vehicle registration. We urge you to resolve this matter as soon as possible to prevent MVA sanctions.

If you have information on the location of a wanted subject, please contact the Fugitive Unit at 240-773-5370. You may be asked to leave a message, but you may remain anonymous. We appreciate your assistance in locating our wanted subjects.
