HIV/STI Basics

What is HIV?

HIV is a virus that anyone can get. It is usually transmitted through sex, but can also be transmitted when people share needles to inject drugs and during childbirth and breastfeeding. The only way to know if you have HIV is to get tested. There is no cure for HIV, but there is very effective treatment that will keep you healthy and prevent transmission to others. Without treatment, HIV weakens your immune system and you can get very sick from infections that would not usually cause serious health problems. To learn more about HIV, visit the CDC’s HIV home page.

If you experience flu-like symptoms, don’t wait. Speak to a healthcare provider about getting tested for HIV.
