Public Computers

rows of computers in a libraryComputers and laptops for public use are available in all MCPL libraries, except Noyes Library for Young Children. Customers may print from public computers or MCPL laptops. All libraries provide WiFi access.

Use your library card number and pin to sign into the public computers. If you don't have a library card or have other issues logging in, please see branchs staff for assistance. Please note that public computers in the libraries shut down ten minutes before closing.

In using library computers and WiFi, you agree to comply with Montgomery County Public Library's Computer, Internet, and Wireless Use Policies.

Laptops

Laptops are available to be be borrowed for in-branch use at all branches except Noyes. Laptops checkouts are for three hours or until closing time. Laptops can be renewed if there is not a waiting list.

Customers must be at least 14 years of age and have a valid MCPL card to check out a laptop. Customers will also be asked to provide a valid photo ID (driver's license, passport, military ID, school ID). Customers may only check out one laptop at a time per eligible library card. Late fines will apply for laptops returned late.

Computer software

MCPL's public computers and laptops have various programs installed.

Web Browsers:

  • Internet Explorer,
  • Firefox,
  • Google Chrome;

Microsoft Office 2010 programs:

  • Word—word processing,
  • Excel—spreadsheets,
  • PowerPoint—presentations,
  • Publisher—desktop publishing;

Open source editing software (desktops only):

  • GIMP—image editing, including photo editing/retouching, image composition, and more,
  • Blender—3D content creation,
  • Inkscape—vector graphics,
  • Audacity—audio recording and editing.

Additional Services

Charging Station Every branch, except Noyes, offers free charging stations for customers to charge phones, tablets, or other portable electronic devices. The style of charging station varies between branches.

To support customer use of the public computers, branches (except Noyes) offer earbuds for $1.00 and flash drives (64 MB) for $3.00. Inquire at your branch regarding availability.

Internet to Go!

Select branches have laptops with wireless hotspots that can circulate outside the branch. These laptop and hotspot combinations, which can be checked out for two weeks, are available at the Aspen Hill, Gaithersburg, Maggie Nightingale, and Marilyn Praisner branches. Laptops and hostpots must be checked out from and returned to their home branch. Additional personal devices may be connected to the hotspot.
