Community Organizations Active in Disaster (COAD)
The Montgomery County COAD is looking for any agency, nonprofit, business, civic group, faith-based organization, or any other community organization that would like to provide assistance to the community during all phases of a disaster or event. If you are an individual looking to get involved, check out the volunteer organizations below and reach out to get involved.

Adventist Community Services of Greater Washington
Adventist Community Services (ACS) volunteers provide disaster response services through the ACS Disaster Response Ministry to assist individuals, families and communities affected by natural and manmade disasters and unforeseen tragedies. ACS has developed an expertise in Donations Management through Multi Agency Warehouses, Collection and Distribution Centers. During other responses, ACS has assisted as requested by feeding survivors and first responders, chain saw teams, debris cleanup and mucking out, temporary roofing, spontaneous volunteer reception centers and in-home repair as part of long term recovery (LTR).
The American Red Cross – National Capital Region
From small house fires to multi-state natural disasters, the American Red Cross goes wherever we’re needed, so people can have clean water, safe shelter and hot meals when they need them most. We provide volunteer support to Montgomery County shelters, help survivors recover and address lingering community needs. Working together with community leaders, government and relief agencies, we organize and execute recovery strategies that include: Providing emergency financial assistance in the immediate aftermath of a disaster, distributing financial assistance for households that need extra help in the long-term, and providing grants for community-based recovery services.
Baptist Convention of Maryland/Delaware
Southern Baptist Disaster Relief brings help, healing and hope to individuals and communities affected by disasters large and small. The Baptist Convention of Maryland/Delaware partners with national, state and associational ministries to support local churches seeking to minister to their neighbors in times of crisis.
Bethesda United Methodist Church
On a national level, Bethesda United Methodist Church (BUMC) is involved in a number of different efforts for disaster relief. We serve in our local community through regular hands-on volunteer opportunities and our support of social service and nonprofit agencies.
Boy Scouts of America Seneca District
Boy Scouts of America Seneca District programs teach young people to be prepared for adventure, education, service, and leadership. During a disaster, Scouts can help with clean up, provide snow shoveling, as well as other volunteer efforts.
Community Reach of Montgomery County
Community Reach of Montgomery County seeks to improve the quality of life for the most vulnerable of Montgomery County residents by providing basic services including housing, healthcare, eldercare, education, and financial emergency assistance, with the goal of achieving and maintaining client self-sufficiency, and advocating on their behalf. Through our network, we look to provide translation services, connections to faith organizations, possible medical services, and other volunteer support to disaster survivors.
Covenant Life Church
Covenant Life Church is an active community of about 1000 people that are eager to serve their neighbors in need. We have a large facility that could help in an emergency situation, and we have people trained in spiritual counseling.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (Montgomery County, MD Alumnae Chapter)
The mission of the DELTA Emergency Response Team (ERT) is to: Increase awareness about emergency preparedness activities; provide structured and systematic training for the membership’s Readiness, Response, and Recovery efforts; provide effective and immediate communication strategies to facilitate and aid in preparedness and response; provide steps for early response and efficient recovery; and to provide resource support and guidance for sorority members and the communities impacted by natural or man-made disasters.
Gaithersburg HELP!
Gaithersburg HELP! maintains a fully equipped and stocked pantry in the Festival Shopping Center in Gaithersburg. We also have numerous volunteer transportation drivers and Spanish translators. Our volunteers are well trained in how to guide clients in finding resources beyond our capabilities, and we have strong partnerships with many other nonprofits, local government groups, and state agencies.
Good Shepherd Lutheran
The Good Shepherd Lutheran Disaster Recovery Ministry mobilizes staff and equipment and enlists volunteers to provide emergency aid, as well as, recovery and rebuilding to victims of floods, storms, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. We also collect and assemble specific supplies, such as flood clean-up and personal-hygiene kits, for disaster survivors.
Greater DC Diaper Bank
Greater DC Diaper Bank empowers families and individuals in need throughout DC, Maryland, and Virginia by providing an adequate and reliable source for basic baby needs and personal hygiene products. We provide supplies to organizations assisting families with young children.
Family Services, Inc.
Family Services, Inc. (FSI), a wholly integrated part of the Sheppard Pratt Health System, provides support and treatment to optimize an individual and/or family's emotional, psychological and somatic well-being. We provide a full range of integrated mental health services that are flexible and individualized to support the needs of the community. If volunteers are needed in the event of an emergency, FSI's Volunteer Specialist can help the designated lead organizations, businesses, departments, etc. to determine the need and coordinate volunteer activities to assist with the situation(s).
Great and Small
Great and Small can provide temporary shelter to horses displaced due to disaster.
Guru Nanak Foundation of America
Guru Nanak Foundation of America (GNFA) has a small paid staff and a large, committed pool of volunteers from the congregation to assist in various tasks. We can provide spiritual counseling, and we have a free community kitchen on the premises run by volunteers that can efficiently prepare and serve hot vegetarian meals.
HOPE Animal-Assisted Crisis Response
HOPE Animal-Assisted Crisis Response (AACR) gives comfort in times of crisis by bringing emotional support with our specially trained dog and handler teams
Housing Initiative Partnership
Housing Initiative Partnership (HIP) has a staff of Certified Housing Counselors bilingual in Spanish capable of providing housing counseling services to families in the event of an emergency.
Lead4Life, Inc.
Lead4Life, Inc . serves at-risk and disconnected youth in the Rockville and surrounding areas. Our staff, interns, volunteers, and youth in need of service hours are able to provide assistance in clean up and distribution of donations in the event of an emergency. In addition, we own two passenger vans that could potentially be used for transport in an emergency.
Long Branch Emergency Preparedness Committee
The Long Branch Emergency Preparedness Committee is a partnership of local service provider organizations serving the Long Branch community. Partners include CHEER, CASA, IMPACT Silver Spring, The Spanish Speaking Community of Maryland, Mary's Center Health Clinic, Centronia, and Montgomery College. It also includes local houses of worship. This partnership is organized to mobilize our collective resources and coordinate community the community to provide culturally and linguistically competent support to community members in response to an emergency and to support recovery in coordination with County, State, and Federal emergency response.
Manna Food Center
Manna Food Center works to end hunger in Montgomery County through food distribution, education and advocacy. We have at our disposal, cold storage units and a fleet of refrigerated trucks that we can deploy in times of community need.
Meals on Wheels of Takoma Park/ Silver Spring
Meals on Wheels delivers healthy, delicious meals to our homebound neighbors who have physical difficulty preparing meals or getting groceries. We have a commercial kitchen that could be used to prepare and distribute food in the event of a disaster.
Montgomery Housing Partnership, Inc.
Montgomery Housing Partnership, Inc . (MHP) serves to house people, empower families, and strengthen neighborhoods. Montgomery Housing Partnership’s mission is to preserve and expand quality affordable housing in Montgomery County, and during a disaster, we may be asked to manage a community fund for disaster survivors and victims.
Shepherd’s Table
Shepherd's Table located in downtown Silver Spring, provides three meals daily to individuals who are food insecure, any of whom are homeless. Our dining room can serve 80 plus people. We would be able to serve individuals and families in need of prepared food on site.
So What Else!
In the event of an emergency, So What Else! is capable of providing last-minute volunteers, childcare support, plus clothing/food donations. Our motto is to 'pay it forward' and on top of the services we are able to provide, we can manage any activities working with children/teens, including arts, sports, or cooking.
St. Peter’s Episcopal Church
St. Peter’s Episcopal Church is a large church with a commercial kitchen and hall as well as classrooms that can be used for sheltering and meal distribution. We have spiritual care available and volunteers to help with the needs of the community.
The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. The Salvation Army disaster response efforts focus on key services, and are tailored to the local needs. The Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Easterseals
The Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Easterseals provides high-quality and accessible behavioral health care to veterans, their families, the families of active duty service members, and caregivers. Our services are available to any person who has served in the U.S. Armed Forces, including the National Guard and Reserves, regardless of role or discharge status.
United Way of the National Capital Area
United Way of the National Capital Area fights for the health, education and financial stability of every person in our community. We tackle the most complex problems by uniting more than 500 partner nonprofits, as well as corporate and community partners, to create a strong, vibrant community with excellent schools, good health, safe neighborhoods and jobs that pay a livable wage.
Temple Beth Ami
Temple Beth Ami is a caring, inclusive, Reform Jewish congregation located in Rockville, MD. During a crisis, Temple Beth Ami can support with donations management and potentially serve as a shelter location.
YMCA – Youth and Family Services
YMCA Youth & Family Services (YFS) has therapists who work in the schools and could provide brief counseling and support to youth in our catchment area (down county) who have been affected by a disaster. YFS also has community school coordinators who have relationships with the community and local service providers who could provide assistance in community organization to meet the needs of youth in our catchment area (down county). Almost all of our staff are bilingual/Spanish and could assist with translation for our clients.
