Child Abuse & Sexual Assault Unit (CASA) Responsibilities

CASA is responsible for investigating cases where:

  • The victim is under 18 years old and has been sexually assaulted by someone known to them.
  • A child has suffered serious physical injuries inflicted by a parent, guardian, or caregiver, requiring hospital admission.
  • Additional cases of child abuse or sexual assault are assigned based on the circumstances and complexity of the case.

The Montgomery County Police Department’s Child Abuse & Sexual Assault Unit (CASA) receives approximately 1,500 reports of child sexual assault and physical abuse each year. CASA is comprised of 13 highly trained investigators who specialize in cases involving the sexual and physical abuse of children (under 18 years of age).

CASA utilizes a trauma-informed, victim-centered approach to ensure thorough and compassionate investigations. The unit collaborates closely with Child Welfare Services, the Tree House Child Advocacy Center, and other partner organizations to provide victims and their families with essential support, services, and information.
