Pay School Bus Camera Ticket
Montgomery County’s Automated School Bus Enforcement Program, Cross Safe, enforces vehicles that pass stopped school buses with the overhead red lights flashing. As of September 2019, all Montgomery county school buses are equipped with enforcement cameras.
A ticket issued through Montgomery County’s automated traffic enforcement program is a civil violation similar to a parking violation. You may pay the fine, which is an admission of guilt, or you may request a hearing. According to Maryland State law, the registered vehicle owner is responsible for the citation.
- All vehicles, in BOTH directions must stop for a bus when the overhead lights turn red.
- The exception is on a divided highway. That would be a roadway with a physical barrier, concrete, grass, etc. that impedes a vehicles travel.
- The barrier must extend the length of the roadway. Pedestrian islands do not divide a roadway.
- Painted turn lanes do not divide a roadway
- There is no limit to number of lanes on the roadway.
- All violations are enforced by video. To view your video, go to www.alertbus.com
- School buses have extended stop arms for additional driver information, but we enforce when the overhead lights turn red, prior to the stop arm being extended.
- The registered owner of the tags receives a $250.00 civil fine.
- No points will be issued against the owner’s driver’s record.
If you, as the registered owner, were not operating the vehicle at the time of the school bus infraction and want to identify the person who was, you shall provide a statement that you were not the driver.
- Your statement must swear and affirm that the person named in the citation was not operating the vehicle at the time of the violation.
- You must provide the full name and the address of the driver.
- You must provide your day time phone number.
- You must sign the letter.
- All requests must be received no later than thirty (30) days after the mail date of the citation.
- Send your request in an envelope clearly marked “ Transfer of Liability” to:
- Automated Traffic Enforcement Unit, P.O. Box 10314, Gaithersburg, MD 20898.
