Sex Offender Registry Unit (SORU) Responsibilities

The Montgomery County Department of Police (MCPD) will vigorously identify, monitor, and track convicted registered sex offenders living, working, and attending school within Montgomery County.

When the SORU receives notification from courts, correctional facilities, the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, the State Sex Offender Registry, and other authorized sources concerning individuals who may be required to register in accordance with the Maryland Sex Offender Registry Statute, the SORU will conduct research and collect any artifacts necessary to substantiate registration requirements.

Sex Offender Registry Requirements

Individuals convicted of a qualifying sex offense residing, working, or attending school in Montgomery County are required to register with the Montgomery County Department of Police.

Registrant Responsibilities

  1. Bi-annual, quarterly, or weekly in-person registration.
  2. Notification of every address and physical location where they habitually live and any changes in residence, employment, telephone number, internet identifiers, or vehicle information within three days of the change.
  3. Report if they become unhoused (homeless). 
  4. Report all releases from any period of incarceration or arrest.
  5. Report if they permanently move to a jurisdiction outside of Maryland or to a foreign country.
  6. Notification of domestic and international travel.
  7. Notification of starting or terminating employment or enrollment at an institution of higher education.
  8. Report if they are granted a legal name change within 3 days.

Wednesdays: 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
