Teenworks Employment Programs
More than just a job!
Teens are employed by Montgomery County Recreation and placed in public sector and nonprofit jobs throughout the County.
TeenWorks employees are provided mentorship and support by career professionals as they navigate through their first job. They engage in job readiness training with ongoing skill-building workshops and experiences, all while getting paid! They are placed in meaningful roles, which allow them to develop critical, marketable skills. TeenWorks opens the door to learning opportunities and facilitates connection to valuable community resources.
Program Details
Interested students must:
- Be a Montgomery County resident, high school student and at least 15 years old
- Have availability to work full year in the program
- Complete the interest form (This connects you to the team that will support you through the process)
- Attend a mandatory TeenWorks employment information session to learn about the program, requirements for employment with Montgomery County Government and next steps, including an interview with the TeenWorks team
- Complete the employment application
- Have the consent of a parent/guardian to be employed in this program

Inside Teenworks Employment
Overview of TeenWorks Program
TeenWorks benefit from an experiential learning model as career professionals and mentors utilize a hands-on approach in coaching teens to become empowered and prepared for the workforce. Through this workforce development program they will work with professionals and have a variety of opportunities to choose from.
How It Works...
Work a maximum number of hours based on grade when first hired as:
- 9th grade - 350 hours
- 10th grade - 300 hours
- 11th grade - 200 hours
- 12th grade - 200 hours
- Completion of three coaching sessions
- Attend 30 hours of workforce development training
- Develop and implement a capstone project
- Earn a certificate of completion and letter of reference

Job Descriptions
- Create and distribute informational material (i.e., flyers, web design, social media posts, handouts, etc.)
- Research the latest trends in a specific field
- Design presentations
- Build special event stages and platforms
- Organize spaces at County facilities
- Deliver surveys and report findings
- Attend and participate in meetings
- Record program registration and attendance
- Develop and implement program plans and activities
- Organize onsite program quality assessments
- Conduct market research
- Provide excellent customer service via phone, email and/or in-person
- Maintain park grounds and facilities
- Assist with set-up and breakdown of events and activities
- Administer routine safety inspections of park amenities and structures
- Collaborate with community stakeholders (i.e., residents, local organizations and government officials)

- Provide comprehensive orientation and onboarding to establish understanding of organizational functions and culture
- Establish guidelines for professionalism; communication, punctuality, accountability, appearance (uniform etiquette), teamwork
- Create a welcoming environment in which apprentice is encouraged to think, challenge themselves and succeed
- Serve as a mentor; guidance, support and regular feedback to create open communication
- Offer various training methods (technology, instructor-led, on-the-job) for apprentice retention of knowledge and applications
