Kate Stewart serves as the Montgomery County Councilmember for District 4, representing North Bethesda, Kensington, Garrett Park, Silver Spring, Takoma Park, and parts of Chevy Chase. She chairs the Government Operations and Fiscal Policy and Audit committees and serves on the Transportation and Environment Committee. Kate has been a strong leader managing the FY26 budget that fully funded our schools, made sure our social services safety net remained intact, and did not raise taxes. She leads a mental health initiative, and launched the United in Service and Support series to aid residents affected by federal cuts, economic instability, and chaotic and harmful actions taken by the federal administration. In her role on the board of the Metropolitan Council of Governments, she has pushed to address chronic homelessness and advance a long-term solution for funding of WMATA. On the Council, Kate has led efforts on pivotal topics including housing affordability, economic development, and healthcare access for the LGBTQ+ community. Prior to joining the Council, Kate served as the Mayor of Takoma Park. Kate and her husband have been residents of Montgomery County for 30 years, where they raised two children who are both Montgomery County Public School graduates
