As part of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, Montgomery County Health and Human Services is providing this important learning opportunity for professionals working with older adults. The purpose of the training is to recognize and reduce the risk of financial exploitation; identify plans for an older adult to manage their finances; and prepare for financial disasters. Participants will become familiar with helpful resources and tools for implementing alternative planning by professionals working with older adults at risk for frauds, scams and identity theft.
Intended Audience:
Social workers, case workers and Long Term Care Ombudsman
Objectives:
- recognize the risk factors for elder financial exploitation
- be able to reduce those risk for clients
- prepare plans for unexpected loss of the client's ability to manage their own money
- provide resources for managing an older adult's money

One Social Work CEU (Cat. II) will be provided for pre-registrants by the Montgomery County Office of Human Resources (MCOHR). MCOHR is approved and authorized by the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners to provide Continuing Education Credits and maintains responsibility for this program. MCOHR is in voluntary compliance with the continuing education standards set by the National Association of Social Workers.
CCL Program Attendance Policy: Participants are expected to arrive on-time and attend the entire conference session.
CEU’s will not be given for partial attendance. No grace period will be allowed at the start of the program. Anyone arriving late
or leaving before the end of the session will not receive CEU's.

- The purpose is to educate the community, including older adults, family members and professionals on the presence of elder abuse, the warning signs, and where to find help.
- When we think of elder abuse, many of us think only of physical and emotional abuse. Seniors are also often the targets of financial abuse and scams (attend the class, *Money $mart for Older Adults. Learn about the types of abuse and how to recognize their signs, who to call for help, and protective measures that can be taken.
- The event is hosted by six public agencies responsible for protecting the County’s seniors: the Montgomery County Police Department; the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services, Adult Protective Services, Licensure & Regulatory Services and the Longterm Care Ombudsman Program; the Office of the State’s Attorney; and the Office of the County Attorney - partnering with the Montgomery County Department of Recreation, the ElderSAFE Center and the Charles E. Smith Life Communities. Funding provided in part by the Montgomery County Family Justice Center Foundation.
- Representatives and exhibitors from organizations that assist seniors will be on hand to provide information. Many of these organizations play a direct role in helping seniors reduce their vulnerability to abuse and keeping seniors safe.
- Also in attendance will be Montgomery County officials, including the County Executive, representatives of the County Council, the State's Attorney, law enforcement representatives and Health and Human Services.
