Navy LTJG Randal Barker Adams
Navy LTJG Randal Barker Adams, 28, of Gaithersburg, Maryland. He was assigned to the USS Chenango as a photographic officer. Adams was killed in action during the Battle of Roi-Namur. Gave his life on January 31, 1944. Graduated from Western High School in D.C. in 1932. Adams studied photography while attending Duke University. He enlisted in the Naval Air Reserve and was stationed at the Anacostia base where he was in charge of the photographic laboratory. He then attended Photographic School at Pensacola, Florida and was commissioned in June 1942. Adams was a member of the Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church and Chevy Chase Lodge No. 42, FAAM.
Navy ENS William Joseph Allen
Navy ENS William Joseph Allen, 21, of Silver Spring, Maryland. He was assigned as a torpedo bomber pilot on the USS Langely (CVL-27), Torpedo Squadron 44, Third Fleet. Allen was killed in action during a battle in Formosa. Gave his life on January 9, 1945. Graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in 1941 and attended the University of Maryland until he enlisted in October 1943. He played the trumpet in Washington bands while in high school and college. The Woodside Methodist Church in Silver Spring dedicated a bronze plaque in memory of Allen who was a member of the church.
Army PFC Herbert Franklin “Jake” Allnutt
Army PFC Herbert Franklin “Jake” Allnutt, 25, of Germantown, Maryland. He was assigned to Company A, 208th Engineer Combat Battalion. Allnutt was killed in the line of duty from a non-battle related incident at Camp Breckenridge, Kentucky. Gave his life February 1, 1944.
Army SSG William E. Altemus
Army SSG William E. Altemus, 23, of Wheaton, Maryland. He was assigned to the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. Altemus died from wounds received during combat in Holland. Gave his life on October 13, 1944. Graduated from Montgomery Blair High School and worked at Judd & Detweiler Inc. before he enlisted in February 1942. Altemus was one of the first paratroopers to land in Sicily. He fought in two battles in Italy, where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart. When he recovered he joined his outfit in England and participated in the invasion of Holland September 17. He wore the presidential unit citation ribbon.
Air Force PVT Ramon Charles Altenreid
Air Force PVT Ramon Charles Altenreid, 23, of Silver Spring, Maryland. Altenreid was killed in the line of duty from a non-battle related incident in Australia. Gave his life on February 9, 1944. The Woodside Methodist Church in Silver Spring dedicated a bronze plaque in memory of Altenreid who was a member of the church.
Navy PHM2 Robert Everett Arnott
Navy PHM2 Robert Everett Arnott, 21, of Silver Spring, Maryland. He was assigned to USS Pennsylvania (BB-38). Arnott was killed in action during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Gave his life on December 7, 1941. Graduated from Naval Hospital School in 1940 as an x-ray technician.
Navy LTJG Harold Abner Axtell, Jr.
Navy LTJG Harold Abner Axtell, Jr., 24, of Takoma Park, Maryland. He was Commander of the Armed Guard, S.S. East Indian. Axtell was killed when his ship was struck by a torpedo and sunk in the Atlantic Ocean during the war. His body was not recovered. Gave his life on November 3, 1942. He graduated from the University of Maryland in 1941 with a major in Bacteriology and he was the Freshman Football Manager, a member of the Latch Key Society and of the Sigma Phi Sigma fraternity.
Marine Corps Capt Carl Olson Bachman
Marine Corps Capt Carl Olson Bachman, 27, of Chevy Chase, Maryland. He was assigned to Company H, 3rd Battalion, 28th Marines Regiment, 5th Marine Division. Bachman was killed in action in Iwo Jima, Japan. Gave his life on March 14, 1945. He enlisted in the Marine Paratroopers before Pearl Harbor and served overseas in the Pacific early in the war. Air Force Maj Andrew Aloysius Barna
Air Force Maj Andrew Aloysius Barna, 25, of Bethesda, Maryland. Barna died in the line of duty from a non-combat related incident while in China. Gave his life on August 2, 1945.
Army LTC Horace Lincoln Beall, Jr.
Army LTC Horace Lincoln Beall, Jr., 39, of Bethesda, Maryland. He was assigned to 163rd Infantry Regiment. Beall died from a non-battled related incident in Rockhampton Region, Australia. Gave his life on September 3, 1943. Beall graduated from Western High School in D.C. in 1920, and U.S. Military Academy – West Point in 1928.
Air Force SSgt Jack Palmer Beasley
Air Force SSgt Jack Palmer Beasley, 24, of Burtonsville, Maryland. He was assigned to the 700th Bomber Squadron, 445th Bomber Group. Beasley died from wounds received during combat in Germany. Gave his life on March 7, 1944. Graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in 1937. Attended the University of Maryland at the time of his enlistment in 1942. He formerly worked in the Montgomery County Engineer’s Office in Silver Spring. He served overseas seven months as a waist gunner.
Army PVT Charles Roscoe Beavers
Army PVT Charles Roscoe Beavers, 31, of Silver Spring, Maryland. He was assigned to 175th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division. Beavers was killed in action in France. Gave his life on August 27, 1944. He enlisted in 1942 and received basic training at Camp White, Oregon and Fort Lewis, Washington.
Army SSG Richard M. Bell
Army SSG Richard M. Bell, 22, of Kensington, Maryland. He was assigned to the 115th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division. Bell was killed in action in Koslar, Kreis Düren, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. Gave his life on February 22, 1945. Graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in 1940. Bell enlisted in 1941 as a member of the National Guard and went overseas as an anti-tank infantryman where he was wounded in Normandy the day after D-Day.
Marine Corps PFC Llewellyn Lee Benjamin, Jr.
Marine Corps PFC Llewellyn Lee Benjamin, Jr., 18, of Chevy Chase, Maryland. He was assigned to 1st Pioneer Battalion, 1st Marine Division. Benjamin was killed in action during the invasion of Peleliu Island. Gave his life on September 27, 1944. Graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in 1942. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in October 1943.
Air Force SSgt Daniel Charles Bereck, Jr.
Air Force SSgt Daniel Charles Bereck, Jr., 30, of Bethesda, Maryland. He was a radio operator and gunner assigned to the B-176 “Lucky Strike”, 850th Bomber Squadron, 490th Bomber Group. Bereck was killed in action. He was declared missing. Gave his life on April 9, 1945. Enlisted in the Army Air Forces in December 1942.
Air Force 2nd Lt Merrill Bernard, Jr.
Air Force 2nd Lt Merrill Bernard, Jr., 25, of Bethesda, Maryland. He was assigned to the 18th Bomber Squadron, B-24E. Bernard died in the line of duty when his bomber crashed into the McCoy Mountains, nine miles west of Blythe, California. Gave his life on October 15, 1943. Bernard received his primary training at Bruce Field, Ballinger, Texas; basic training at Goodfellow Air Force Base, San Angelo, Texas; and received his commission at Ellington Field, Houston, Texas. He had been in training with a bomber crew as first pilot.
Army SGT Claude Alton Bodine
Army SGT Claude Alton Bodine, 30, of Silver Spring, Maryland. He was assigned to the 3rd 18th Infantry, 80th Infantry Division. Bodine was killed in action in Germany after his unit was captured in the town of Grablesben. Gave his life on April 10, 1945. Graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in 1934.
Army PFC Donald Wilbur Bonney
Army PFC Donald Wilbur Bonney, 20, of Takoma Park, Maryland. He was assigned to the 48th Services Squadron, 45th Service Group. Bonney died in the line of duty after contracting malaria while with the Army Air Forces in New Guinea. Gave his life on May 27, 1943.
Army PVT Harry Bort, Jr.
Army PVT Harry Bort, Jr., 27, of Bethesda, Maryland. He was assigned to the 36th Engineer Regiment. Bort was killed in action in Italy. Gave his life on February 25, 1944. As an Army Engineer, he participated in the invasions of North Africa and Sicily, Italy, and was serving in the Mediterranean. Bort received the Purple Heart for injuries suffered that resulted in his death. He was a route agent for The Star in Bethesda for 17 years before he entered the service.
Army SGT Reed M. Bottomley
Army SGT Reed M. Bottomley, 31, of Gaithersburg, Maryland. He was assigned as a Ball Turret Gunner on B-17F #42-29658, 367th Bomber Squadron, 306th Bomber Group, Heavy. Bottomley was killed in action when his B-17 was hit by German flak and crashed in Stotel, eight miles south of Bremerhaven, Germany during the war. Gave his life on April 17, 1943.
Marine Corps Capt Calvert Sheriff Bowie
Marine Corps Capt Calvert Sheriff Bowie, 25, of Rockville, Maryland. He was assigned to Marine Torpedo Bombing Squadron. Bowie was lost at sea while on a reconnaissance mission near Guadalcanal. Gave his life on May 30, 1943. Bowie attended Georgetown Law School for a year before receiving a commission as a pilot in the Marine Corps Reserve in June 1942. He was a member of the Chevy Chase Club.
Army PVT Harold Kenneth Bradfield
Army PVT Harold Kenneth Bradfield, 28, of Cabin John, Maryland. He was assigned to 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. Bradfield was killed in action in France. Gave his life on November 27, 1944.
Navy LT Robert Graham Bradley
Navy LT Robert Graham Bradley, 23, of Silver Spring, Maryland. He was assigned to the USS Princeton (CVL-23). Bradley was declared missing in action when the Princeton was sunk in the Battle of Leyte Gulf during the war. Gave his life on October 24, 1944. Graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1943. The USS Robert G. Bradley (FFG-49) is an Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate, a decommissioned ship of the United States Navy named for Lieutenant Bradley who was awarded the Navy Cross posthumously for his heroism on USS Princeton during the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
Air Force 2nd Lt Franklyn Piersol Bunker
Air Force 2nd Lt Franklyn Piersol Bunker, 22, of Silver Spring, Maryland. He was assigned to 15th Photographic Squadron, 10th Reconnaissance Group and was a pilot of a P-51. Bunker was killed in action. Gave his life on February 25, 1945. Graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1940. Attended University of Maryland and was a chemical engineering student when he entered into service.
Navy LCDR John Edward Burke
Navy LCDR John Edward Burke, 37, of Chevy Chase, Maryland. He was assigned to the USS Wasp (CV-7), which was a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier, and then to the USS South Dakota (BB-57). Burke was killed in action and buried at sea after the USS South Dakota came under heavy fire during the second Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. Gave his life on November 15, 1942. He was attending law school in Washington, D.C., and living in Chevy Chase, Maryland, when World War II began. He immediately applied for active sea duty and was assigned to duty in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He had previously served from 1937 to 1940 in China. Graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1923. LCDR Burke’s widow, Miriam, christened the USS Burke (DE-215/APD-65), a Buckley-class destroyer escort that was named in honor of LCDR Burke and launched on April 4, 1943 in the Philadelphia Navy Yard in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
TSGT Winfred Sylvester Burns
TSGT Winfred Sylvester Burns, 30, of Laytonsville, Maryland. Assigned to Company L, 3rd Battalion, 331st Infantry Regiment, 83rd Infantry Division. Burns was killed in action when the 83rd Infantry Division took fire from the German 17th SS Division and 6th Parachute Regiment near Meautis, France. Gave his life on July 4, 1944. Burns enlisted in the U.S. Army on December 15, 1939 and was stationed at Fort Myer, Arlington, Virginia with the 3rd Cavalry. In July 1942, then Staff Sergeant (SSGT) Burns was one of the men from the 3rd Cavalry who was transferred to Company L, 3rd Battalion, 331st Infantry Regiment, 83rd Infantry Division, stationed at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia and then in Breckenridge, Kentucky. The 83rd Infantry Division ("Thunderbolt") arrived in England on April 16, 1944. TSGT Burns was awarded the Purple Heart.
Army SGT Paul Elias Bussler, Jr.
Army SGT Paul Elias Bussler, Jr., 19, of Ashton, Maryland. He was assigned to 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. Bussler was killed in action. Gave his life on August 11, 1944. Attended Sherwood High School, was active in athletics and was preparing to study medicine before he inducted into the Army in July 1943. He received basic training at Camp Crofton, Maryland and went overseas in November 1943.
Air Force Sgt Gordon J. Cairns
Air Force Sgt Gordon J. Cairns, 28, of Silver Spring, Maryland. He was assigned to 471st Bomber Squadron, 334th Bomber Group. Cairns was killed in action when a routine training flight he was on crashed on the Myrtle Beach gunnery range in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Gave his life on January 6, 1943.
Army PFC Day Canterbury
Army PFC Day Canterbury, 28, of Takoma Park, Maryland. He was assigned to 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. Canterbury was killed in action during in the Battle of the Hedgerows in Saint-Lô, Departement de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France. Gave his life on July 11, 1944.
Marine Corps Pvt Horace Collier Carpenter
Marine Corps Pvt Horace Collier Carpenter, 20, of Chevy Chase, Maryland. He was assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 23rd Marines, 4th Marine Division, FMF, Marianas Island. Carpenter was killed in action. Gave his life on June 14, 1944.
Air Force 1st Lt Allison Henderson Chapin, Jr.
Air Force 1st Lt Allison Henderson Chapin, Jr., 23, of Rockville, Maryland. He was assigned to the 2086th Engineer Aviation Fire Fighting Platoon. Chapin was injured on by a prematurely exploding rifle grenade in the Burma-India Theater and died from those injuries in Bhamo, Burma (now Myanmar). Gave his life on February 20, 1945. Chapin graduated from high school in Rockville where he participated in wrestling, track and cross county sports. Chapin was also an Eagle Scout in 1939 and helped organize the Rockville troop.
Air Force 2nd Lt Edward Allen Clarke
Air Force 2nd Lt Edward Allen Clarke, 22, of Silver Spring, Maryland. He was assigned to 11th Fighter Squadron, 343 Fighter Group. Clarke died in the line of duty from a non-battle related incident in Alaska. Gave his life on March 13, 1944. Graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in 1940. Active in baseball, soccer and track teams in high school, Clarke also played on the Silver Spring football team and on the American Legion baseball team. Enlisted in the Army Forces October 19, 1942, and received his wings in October 1943 at Napier Field, Dothan, Alabama.
Army CPT Carl Albert Cline, Jr.
Army CPT Carl Albert Cline, Jr., 26, of Claggettsville, Maryland. He was assigned to Headquarters, 1st Battalion. Cline was killed in action in Germany. Gave his life on September 20, 1944. Graduated from Damascus High School. Graduated from the University of Maryland in 1941. He entered the Army as a second lieutenant soon after graduation. Cline won the Silver Star for gallantry in action and the Purple Heart for wounds received.
Army MAJ Everett Smith Cofran
Army MAJ Everett Smith Cofran, 42, of Silver Spring, Maryland. He was assigned to the 3rd Military Government Regiment. Cofran died in the line of duty from a non-battle related incident in Passau, Bavaria, Germany. Gave his life on January 7, 1946. Cofran had assumed command of the military government in Passau two months prior to his death. He was a veteran of World War I, which he enlisted in when he was 15 years old.
Army SGT Frank Thaddeus Coleman
Army SGT Frank Thaddeus Coleman, 19, of Bethesda, Maryland. He was assigned to the 354th Air Base Squadron and was a gunner and radioman on a bomber crew. Coleman died in the line of duty of a non-battle related incident when the B-17 bomber (#42-6017) he was flying crashed and burned when attempting a routine landing near the southwest corner of the Sioux City Army Air Base, Iowa. Coleman graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School. Enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943.

Army PVT Ernest Russell Cook, 25, of Silver Spring, Maryland. He was assigned to 578th Signal Depot Company. Cook died in the line of duty of a non-battle related incident. Gave his life on April 11, 1945.
Army PFC Russell Reed Copeland
Army PFC Russell Reed Copeland, 24, of Bethesda, Maryland. He was assigned to 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division. Copeland was killed in action. Gave his life on November 23, 1944.
Air Force 1st Lt John Preston Cox
Air Force 1st Lt John Preston Cox, 23, of Silver Spring, Maryland. He was assigned to 44th Wings, 18th Division. Cox was shot down while flying over Rabaul, Papua New Guinea and held as a prisoner of war in Rabaul by the Japanese Military. He was killed in action when he was executed. Gave his life on March 5, 1944. Graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in 1938.
Army PVT William M. Cronise
Army PVT William M. Cronise, 19, of Rockville, Maryland. He was assigned to 533rd Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment. Cronise died in the line of duty from a non-battle related incident in Saidor, New Guinea. Gave his life on April 1, 1944. Attended training at Camp Lee, Virginia. Assigned to the Amphibian Engineers and stationed at Fort Ord, California.
Army SSG Preston Eugene Curtis
Army SSG Preston Eugene Curtis, 22, of Bethesda, Maryland. He was assigned to Company G, 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment. Curtis was killed in action when he was leading a squad across the Ruhr River Valley in Germany. Gave his life on April 13, 1945. He attended Richard Montgomery High School. Enlisted in the Army in October 1941 and volunteered for the paratroopers. Participated in the invasion of Normandy.
Army PVT Russel Davis Curtis
Army PVT Russel Davis Curtis, 22, of Rockville, Maryland. He was assigned to Quartermaster Corps. Curtis was killed in the line of duty from a non-battled related incident. Gave his life on February 27, 1945.
Air Force Capt Clifford H. Davis
Air Force Capt Clifford H. Davis, 24, of Montgomery County, Maryland. He was assigned to 353rd Fighter Squadron, 354th Fighter Group. Davis was killed in action when his plane crashed at Setz, Belgium during a support mission in St-Vith area. Gave his life on January 29, 1945. Graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in 1938.
Air Force 1st Lt James R. Davis
Air Force 1st Lt James R. Davis, 23, of Chevy Chase, Maryland. He was assigned to 431st Bomber Squadron, 11th Bomber Group. Davis was killed in action when his plane crashed into the sea and exploded, possibly after having been hit by an aerial bomb in the Central Pacific area. He was declared missing in action. Gave his life on January 2, 1944. Participated in the air attacks against the Gilbert Islands and was awarded the Air Medal. Attended the University of Maryland for three years prior to his enlistment.
Army PFC Robert Henry Davis
Army PFC Robert Henry Davis, 27, of Gaithersburg, Maryland. He was assigned to 29th Chemical Decontamination Company, a segregated African American unit. Davis died in the line of duty while loading mortar ammunition that subsequently exploded aboard LSTs in West Loch, Pearl Harbor. Davis was declared missing in action. Gave his life on May 21, 1944.
Air Force Sgt Robert Philip Davis
Air Force Sgt Robert Philip Davis, 21, of Silver Spring, Maryland. He was a top-turret gunner assigned to B-29 “City of Baltimore”, 6th Bomber Squadron, 29th Bomber Group. Davis died from wounds received in action in Guam. Gave his life on May 15, 1945. Graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in 1942. Attended Remote Control Gunnery School in Denver, Colorado. Completed nine 3,000 mile missions to Tokyo, Japan and other targets. Posthumously awarded the Air Medal.
Army CPT William Bruce Davis
Army CPT William Bruce Davis, 25, of Silver Spring, Maryland. He was assigned to Company C, 10th Infantry Regiment, 5th Infantry Division. Davis was killed in action during a raid at Metz. Gave his life on September 10, 1944. Graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in 1936. Attended the University of Maryland.
Army MAJ Robert Stanley Dayhoff
Army MAJ Robert Stanley Dayhoff, 34, of Silver Spring, Maryland. He was assigned to Transportation Corps. Dayhoff died from a non-battled related incident. Gave his life on January 18, 1945. Member of the Silver Spring Lodge of Masons. Joined the Army in 1928, resigning in 1935 to enter the War Department as a civilian administrative assistant in the Army Services Forces. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in September 1942 and became a major in April 1944.
Army SSG Harry Clinton Dean, Jr.
Army SSG Harry Clinton Dean, Jr., 34, of Bethesda Maryland. He was assigned as a platoon sergeant to 306th Infantry Regiment, 77th Infantry Division. Dean was killed in action in Okinawa, Japan. Gave his life on May 30, 1945. Employed as a fireman prior to the war.
Navy LCDR Lewis Edward Dixon
Navy LCDR Lewis Edward Dixon, 42, of Bethesda, Maryland. He was assigned to USS Miantonomah. Dixon was killed in action when his ship struck a mine and sunk off the coast of France during the war. He was declared missing at sea. Gave his life on September 25, 1944. Dixon was prominent in civic affairs in Bethesda where he was a member of the Battery Park Citizens’ Association and at one time was chairman of its Governmental Affairs Committee.
Army TSGT Milton Smith Dobbs
Army TSGT Milton Smith Dobbs, 28, of Chevy Chase, Maryland. He was assigned to 310th Infantry Regiment, 78th Infantry Division. Dobbs was killed in action. Gave his life on December 15, 1944.
Army 1LT Daniel Dodd
Army 1LT Daniel Dodd, 39, of Chevy Chase, Maryland. He was assigned as a security officer on convoy duty with Transportation Corps. Dodd died from a non-battle related incident in Richmond, Virginia. Gave his life on October 12, 1944.
Army PFC Edward Lee Doggett
Army PFC Edward Lee Doggett, 22, of Poolesville, Maryland. He was assigned to 338th Infantry Regiment, 85th Infantry Division. Doggett died of wounds received in action. Gave his life on October 13, 1944. Awarded the Bronze Star for gallantry in action. Served as a commanding officer of an amphibious training base in England prior to the assault on Normandy, where he was cited for his skill in commanding the base and supervising operations. Employed on a farm in Rockville prior to enter the Army in November 1942.
Navy S2 John Livingston Donaldson
Navy S2 John Livingston Donaldson, 19, of Bethesda, Maryland. Served as a mine sweeper on the USS Emmons (DD-457). Donaldson was declared missing in action in Okinawa, Japan after the USS Emmons was struck by five Japanese kamikazes which set the ship ablaze. The ship was intentionally sunk the following day. Gave his life on April 6, 1945. Graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in 1943.
Army TEC4 George Dorris Dorroh, Jr.
Army TEC4 George Dorris Dorroh, Jr., 19, of Garrett Park, Maryland. He was assigned to 2nd Signal Service Battalion, Signal Corps. Dorroh died from a non-battle related incident. Gave his life on January 19, 1945. Graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in 1943.
Army PFC Emery Ervin Dove
Army PFC Emery Ervin Dove, 31, of Rockville, Maryland. He was assigned to 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. Dove was killed in action in the North African area. Gave his life on August 6, 1943. Employed by J. H. Small nurseries in Kensington prior to his service.

Army PVT Willie Vernon Dove of Rockville, Maryland. Dove was killed in the line of duty from a non-battle related incident. Gave his life on unknown.
Army PFC Robert Lowell Dunham
Army PFC Robert Lowell Dunham, 25, of Takoma Park, Maryland. He was assigned to 23rd Armored Engineer Battalion, 3rd Armored Division. Dunham was killed in action while helping his unit build bridges across the Seine and Meuse Rivers so the divison could march in Belgium. Gave his life on August 17, 1944. Graduated from Montgomery Blair Highschool in 1938.

Air Force Pvt John Joseph Faris, 22, of Silver Spring, Maryland. He was assigned to 49th Fighter Control Squadron, 49th Pursuit Group. Faris died in the line of duty from a non-battle related incident when a plane he was flying on went missing in Australia. Gave his life on April 21, 1942. His body was recovered and he was buried at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1949. Attended Takoma-Silver Spring High School and left school in 1938 to join the Army.

Gave his life September 23, 1944. He graduated from Calvin Coolidge High School in 1943. He had been a Boy Scout, a member of his high school cadet corps and the Brookland Baptist Church.

Field was killed in action during a volunteer rescue mission in Germany in search of trapped men. Gave his life on March 6, 1945. Attended Georgetown Preparatory School. Graduated United States Military Academy Preparatory School (West Point) in 1943. Posthumously awarded the Silver Star Medal for gallantry in action in Germany during a sudden enemy counterattack.

Army SGT Joseph Tyler Giusta, 20, of Silver Spring, Maryland. He was assigned to B-24E Liberator (#41-29045), 457 th Bomber Squadron, 330 th Bomber Group. Giusta died in the line of duty when his airplane crashed twenty-five miles northeast of Biggs Field, near El Paso Texas. Gave his life on August 18, 1943. Prior to service he was a paid member of the Silver Spring Volunteer Fire Department.

Navy CDR Malcolm Parker Hanson, Sr., 47, of Chevy Chase, Maryland. Hanson was killed in action in an airplane crash in Alaska. Gave his life on August 8, 1942. Graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1924. Commander Hanson served as chief radio engineer of the 1928 to 1930 Byrd South Pole expedition. Before returning to active naval duty in 1940, Commander Hanson was connected with the Washington Institute of Technology and from 1930 to 1937 he was in charge of the radio test laboratory of the Anacostia Naval Station.

Air Force MSgt Philip Stanley Harrison, Jr., 32, of Rockville, Maryland. He was assigned to 678th Bomber Squadron, 444th Bomber Group. Harrison was declared missing in action when two B-29s collided over the Pacific Ocean. Gave his life on June 1, 1945. Harrison was a gunner instructor on a B-29 and trained many troops, including Captain Clark Gable. Awarded the "Distinguished Flying Cross", Air Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, and a Purple Heart.

Graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1940. After serving on the USS Mississippi for a year, Henderson volunteered for submarine duty and was assigned to the submarine Wahoo. Awarded a Silver Star and a Purple Heart.

Hubbard was declared missing in action when his ship caught on fire during a German air attack in Bari, Italy. The USS Joseph Wheeler was in the Port of Bari, Italy either unloading or loading a cargo. While in the Port of Bari they they were attacked by German Ju-88 bombers causing massive explosions while the ships were unloading supplies. Gave his life on December 3, 1944.

Mobley died in the line of duty five days after the war ended from severe acute malaria and hepatic abscess in Manila. He was previously wounded in the Southwest Pacific. Gave his life on September 7, 1945.

Navy RTC Robert Turner Thielscher, 25 , of Chevy Chase, Maryland. He was assigned to the USS Indianapolis (CA-35). Thielscher died when his ship was torpedoed by Imperial Japanese Navy submarine I-58. He was declared missing in action. Gave his life on July 30, 1945.

Air Force CPL Robert George Thomas, 22, of Rockville, Maryland. He was assigned to 13th Air Force, 11th Bombardment Group, 98th Bombardment Squadron and was a gunner on B-17E #412616 (Blue Goose). Thomas died when the plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire, tearing off a wing causing the plane to crash into the sea near Bougainville, New Guinea. He was declared missing in action. Gave his life on September 29, 1942.

Army TEC4 Frederick Toal, 27, of Takoma Park, Maryland. He was assigned to 317 th Station Hospital at Camp Atterbury, Indiana. Toal died in the line of duty from wounds received from an accident involving a dynamite blast. Gave his life on June 4, 1943.
Marine Corps Pvt James Trimble III
Marine Corps Pvt James Trimble III, 19, of Bethesda, Maryland. He was assigned to 4th Platoon, 3rd Reconnaissance Company, 3rd Marine Division. Trimble was killed in action when a Japanese soldier with a mine strapped to his body jumped in his foxhole, wrapped his arms around the severely wounded Marine and detonated the mine, killing them both. Gave his life on 1945. Graduated from St. Albans School in Washington, DC.

Army PVT Eugene Rufus Umberger, 34, of Germantown, Maryland. He was assigned to 134th Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division. Umberger was killed in action during the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium. Gave his life on January 1, 1945. Prior to enlistment, Umberger was the Sunday School Superintendent for the Germantown Baptist Church.

Marine Corps 1stLt Cecil Joseph Umstead, 34, of Kensington, Maryland. He was assigned to Headquarters Company, Regulation Station (Transient Center). Umstead was declared missing in action in New South Wales, Australia. Gave his life on April 17, 1943. Prior to enlistment, Umstead was employed as a civil engineer and helped to build the development of Rock Creek Hills in Kensington.

Walsh died from injuries sustained from a non-battle related incident during a jeep accident. He served through the Normandy campaign and the allied drive across France. Gave his life on October 14, 1945.

Marine Corps PFC John Franklin Walter, 20, of Gaithersburg, Maryland. He was assigned to Battery F, 2nd Battalion, 12th Marines, 3rd Marine Division. Walter was killed in action in Guam. Gave his life on July 26, 1944. He served two years and was a veteran of the Bougainville battle. Attended St. Martin’s School in Gaithersburg.

Army LTC William Edwin Warfield, 27, of Damascus, Maryland. He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 115th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division. Warfield was killed in action by enemy fire after the invasion of Normandy, France. Gave his life on June 10, 1944. Prior to enlistment, Warfield taught science and physical education for five years at the Takoma-Silver Spring Junior High School.

Watkins died in the line of duty from a non-battle related incident when the plane he was in crashed in Canewdon, England. Gave his life on March 1, 1945.

Navy CPhM Thomas Addison Wetherell
Navy CPhM Thomas Addison Wetherell, 36, of Gaithersburg, Maryland. He was assigned to the USS Langley. Wetherell died when the USS Pecos was sunk by a Japanese air attack from Soryu during the war in the Indian Ocean. He was a survivor of the sinking of the Langley and had been rescued by the USS Pecos. Gave his life on March 1, 1942.

Navy Reserve LT (MC) Stafford Manchester Wheeler, 34, of Bethesda, Maryland. He was assigned to the U.S.A. Typhus Commission, Typhus Control Unit. Wheeler was killed in action in Yugoslavia from an explosion of a Nazi land mine. Gave his life on April 13, 1945. Wheeler served as an instructor at the Bethesda Medical Center before going overseas.

Air Force 2nd Lt Walter Frewen Wilson, Jr., 23, of Brookeville, Maryland. He served as a pilot and was assigned to 328th Ferry Squadron. Wilson died in the line of duty from a non-battle related crash in Tunisia. Gave his life on November 18, 1944. In 1952, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Brookeville installed a new church bell in honor of Wilson. .
