This project provides for the replacement of the existing Zion Road Bridge over Hawlings River. The existing bridge, built in 1930, is a 22-foot 11-inch-long single span structure carrying an approximate 11.6-foot clear roadway with no sidewalks. The existing superstructure consists concrete arch with asphalt roadway with concrete abutments and wingwalls. The proposed replacement bridge includes a 35-foot-long single span concrete arch. The new bridge structure will provide a 20-foot roadway and two 2-foot shoulders on the bridge. The project includes the installation of stream stabilization measures, riparian enhancement within the Rachel Carson Conservation Park and approach roadway work at each end of the bridge as necessary to tie-in to the existing roadway. The bridge and road will be closed to traffic within school summer break during construction. Accelerated bridge construction techniques will be utilized to minimize the disruption to the traveling public and local community.
