Dawson Avenue Culvert Replacement

This project is located in Silver Spring, MD, on Dawson Avenue near Collins Avenue. This project will commence with a road closure and implementation of a detour around the work zone. This will be followed by the installation of erosion and sediment control devices and maintenance of stream flow controls. The Contractor will then remove the existing 46” x 69” structural plate pipe arch and concrete storm drain structures and ditches. This will be replaced with the proposed concrete box culvert and new storm drain pipe and structures. The contract also includes WSSC Watermain and Sewer main relocation work, mill, and overlay of the existing roadway surface.

Project Schedule

The project will begin in late October 2024 and last approximately 150 Days. Crews will work onsite from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays and possibly on weekends if necessary. A full-time roadway detour and a pedestrian sidewalk/walking path detour will be implemented for the duration of the project. All efforts will be made not to inconvenience the traveling public or pedestrians in the community.

Over the next couple of weeks the following operations will be ongoing:

  • RCI has completed the installation of the WSSC utilities associated with the project.
  • RCI has demolished the existing head-wall and are currently forming the footing for the outfall head-wall and are scheduled to pour concrete on 1/3/2025, weather pending.
  • RCI will continue work building the head-wall and wing-walls on the outfall end of the culvert.
