Remembrance and Reconciliation
November is Remembrance and Reconciliation Month
The County Commission on Remembrance and Reconciliation will hold special events and activities throughout November, commemorating the 160th anniversary of Maryland's Emancipation Day and promoting a better understanding of County history – including recognition of three men who were victims of racial terror lynchings in the late 1800s.
The Commission encourages other groups to organize events to celebrate, honor and acknowledge as well. Throughout the month, MCPS students will learn about local African American history, and County libraries will host exhibits. Similarly, the Commission invites residents, agencies, and the private sector to engage in conversations among families, neighbors, and coworkers to acknowledge, alleviate, and dispel the harms caused by racism and discrimination as evidenced in words, acts, and deeds.
