Man Succumbs to Injuries After Fire

Cause of Rockville fire remains under investigation

Montgomery County, MD- - Units from Montgomery County Fire and Rescue were dispatched shortly after 12:30 this morning for the report of an apartment fire in the 12200 block of Braxfield Court in Rockville. First arriving units reported fire showing from a balcony at the complex and additional resources were requested. The fire was quickly extinguished. An occupant from the fire apartment was located and transported to an area hospital in critical condition where he later died. The victim has been identified as Michael Francis Mercurio, age 53. Red Cross was on the scene to assist residents displaced by the fire.

The fire caused an estimated $40,000 in damages and remains under investigation.
