Watershed restoration can be very complicated and many factors affect what approach is taken to improve water quality. The County utilizes a set of tools to fight against stormwater pollution to help keep our waters clean. These tools include capturing stormwater runoff through green streets and stormwater ponds, physically enhancing stream conditions by constructing aquatic habitat or planting native vegetation.
Providing stormwater management on existing County facilities is another tool to help reduce impacts to streams and is a significant portion of our program. This is important because the County is mandated by the State of Maryland under the NPDES – MS4 Permit to control pollution through stormwater management for healthier watersheds.
- Stream Restoration Stream restoration is performed to improve the environmental health of a river or stream within their present environmental context.
- Green Streets Green Streets are innovative landscaping designs that play a leading role in reducing and filtering stormwater runoff.
- Stormwater Ponds Various types of stormwater ponds capture and reduce pollution during storms that would otherwise go directly to our streams.
