Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT), Division of Transportation Engineering (DTE), will soon begin construction activities for a concrete sidewalk along the west side of MD 109 (Frederick Road) in Hyattstown. The project is about 2400 feet long from its southern limit near Little Bennett Creek to the northern limit near the Montgomery County line.
The new sidewalk will provide safe and direct pedestrian access within the Hyattstown Historical District to the neighborhood, retail areas, civic space, churches, historical sites, Little Bennett Regional Park, and a transit stop. The 1994 Clarksburg Master Plan and Hyattstown Special Study Area encourages the installation of sidewalk along the MD 355 (Frederick Road) within the town and the sidewalk installation has also been requested by the local community.
The scope will a include 5 foot wide concrete sidewalk and 10 foot wide shared use path with ADA compliant ramps, concrete driveway aprons, curb and gutter, drainage, pedestrian signals at the MD 109 intersection, retaining walls and landscaping. MD 355 will receive a new pavement surface and markings. The sidewalk will run north of the MD 109/MD 355 intersection about 1900 feet, to the shopping center at the County line. A 10 foot wide, concrete shared use path for use by pedestrians and bicycles, will be constructed from the intersection, south 400 feet, to a point near the WSSC property located opposite from Hyattstown Mill Road.
