Purple Line BiPPA
Long Branch Station Sidewalk Proposal

Project Description

Welcome to our community initiative to improve sidewalk connectivity around the new Purple Line metro stations. The construction of Purple Line stations will result in community centers where people will live, eat, shop, and work. As traffic to and from these community centers grows, pedestrians and cyclists must be prioritized. Enhancing cycling and walking facilities, while emphasizing safety and accessibility, will allow Purple Line users to be more connected to communities throughout Montgomery County and the DC area.

Collectively, the development of improved bicycle and pedestrian facilities can help decrease traffic congestion and air pollution and enhance quality of life. By providing a variety of transportation modes for County residents to access jobs, public services, and social networks, the new facilities will promote equity for all residents, particularly those who may allocate a greater share of their budgets to transportation, including low-income and senior citizens.

In line with these goals, the Long Branch Station Sidewalk Proposal provides for the installation of a 5-foot-wide concrete sidewalk on the following County roads within a half mile of the new station:

  • The east side of Haddon Drive from Long Branch Trail to Clayborn Avenue
  • The north side of Hudson Avenue from Greenwood Ave to Garland Avenue
  • The east side of Greenwood Avenue from Clayborn Avenue to Houston Avenue
  • The north side of Browning Avenue from Greenwood Avenue to Glenview Avenue
  • The east side of Glenview Avenue from Garland Avenue to Browning Avenue
  • The south side of Plymouth Street from Flower Avenue to Walden Road
  • The southeast side of East Wayne Avenue from Flower Avenue to 307 E. Wayne Avenue
  • The east side of Sudbury Road from E. Schuyler Road to Plymouth Street

In addition to new sidewalks, MCDOT will also add crosswalks, curb ramps, and other pedestrian amenities to make it easier for residents to navigate the area around the new Purple Line stations. By enhancing sidewalk connectivity, MCDOT is making it more convenient for people to choose walking as a mode of transportation, which has numerous health and environmental benefits. Overall, the sidewalk connectivity enhancements by MCDOT near the new Purple Line stations are a positive step towards creating a more pedestrian-friendly environment in Montgomery County. These improvements not only improve access to public transportation but also promote walkability and sustainability in the community.

Project Schedule

The Sidewalk Program will hold a virtual Public Information Workshop on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. to present the Purple Line BiPPA Long Branch and Manchester Place Stations Sidewalk proposal. The public will have the opportunity to ask questions and provide comments.

The community workshop will be an opportunity for residents, businesses, and other stakeholders to learn more about the proposed sidewalk installation project, provide feedback on the proposed plans, and ask questions. We hope you will join us for this important discussion and help us shape the future of the Long Branch and Manchester Place areas. Together, we can make these roads safer and more accessible for pedestrians, cyclists, and everyone who uses them.

Following the workshop, the Record for this matter will remain open for an additional 4 weeks for the public to submit written comments. The Record will close on Thursday, May 14, 2026, at 5:00 pm. Oral and written comments carry the same weight.
