The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is conducting this feasibility study to document existing conditions and explore bikeway network and bicycle facility type alternatives along and around Cheltenham Drive. This segment is part of the Bethesda Bike Loop and will connect planned two-way separated bike lanes along Woodmont Avenue to the Pearl Street Signed Bike Route. Cheltenham Drive along with a few other study segments in Downtown Bethesda are recommended for bicycle facilities in the county-wide Bicycle Master Plan. This study will explore range of network alternatives and corresponding context specific bikeway types to create a low-stress east-west bikeway connection.
Project Background
MCDOT has been planning and implementing bicycle facility projects across the county over the last several years. MCDOT is advancing bikeway projects to implement the bicycle network recommended in the 2017 Bethesda Downtown Sector Plan and the 2018 county-wide Bicycle Master Plan. Several projects that form the Bethesda Loop, including the two-way separated bicycle lanes on Woodmont Avenue and Montgomery Lane/Montgomery Avenue, are in various stages of engineering design and implementation. However, exact route and bicycle facility types have not yet been finalized for part of the loop along Cheltenham Drive, east of Wisconsin Avenue. This project will build on the previous planning efforts and advance bikeway projects to complete the Bethesda Loop. Apart from Cheltenham Drive, the study segments within the scope of this project include Chase Avenue, Harling Lane, Tilbury Street, and Sleaford Road.
