The FJC Training Institute provides trainings free of charge to organizations, agencies, groups and the general public on a variety of topics related to domestic violence and teen dating violence. Please read the descriptions below.
Our staff can also create personalized trainings on a topic related to domestic violence. 
*Please note: The Training Institute cannot provide trainings to individuals.

 DV 101: Dynamics of Domestic Violence
60 minutes

This training provides an overview of domestic violence. The presentation addresses different types of domestic violence, the prevalence of violence, and the effects of children. The presenter will review warning signs, how to help a victim and the resources available in Montgomery County. 

 It Is Your Business: Domestic Violence and Bystander Intervention
60 minutes

This training provides information on how people can safely intervene when witnessing domestic violence. The presenter will provide an overview on domestic violence and then discuss what bystander intervention is and how to help if you are a friend, neighbor or witness an incident in public. Domestic Violence resources available in Montgomery County will also be shared.

 Living in Fear: Children and Domestic Violence
60 minutes
This training provides an overview of domestic violence. It then goes into detail about how children are affected when they witness domestic violence, what the warning signs are of children who are affected by this trauma and the resources available in Montgomery County. 

 Creating a Safe Haven: Faith and Domestic Violence
60 minutes

This training for Faith Based Institutions and Organizational Leadership will provide an overview of domestic violence, including spiritual abuse.  The training will then discuss the important role faith leaders have in supporting the victim. 

 Domestic Violence and the Workplace (for Employees)
60 minutes

This training provides an overview of domestic violence. It then expands to discuss how domestic violence can affect survivors while at work, and what the warning signs are. The training will then talk about how co-workers can support each other to keep everyone safe.

 Domestic Violence and the Workplace (for Managers)
60 minutes

This training provides an overview of domestic violence. It then expands to discuss how domestic violence can affect survivors while at work, including productivity and morale, and what the warning signs are. The training will then talk about how supervisors can support their employees and what policies and procedures should be in place. 

 Healthcare Response to Intimate Partner Violence 
90 minutes
This training is in partnership with the Maryland Health Care Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
In this workshop, participants will learn to identify the signs and health impacts of intimate partner violence (IPV) as they show up in the medical setting and develop a proper health care response to IPV from a trauma-informed approach and intersectional lens. Presenters will discuss proper documentation, confidentiality, best practices, and more. The presentation will draw attention to how many victims of abuse have experienced not only one type of abuse, but multiple forms of violence and trauma over the course of their lifetimes, resulting in complex trauma and different trauma-responses to the healthcare system itself. 

 Pregnancy and Intimate Partner Violence
90 minutes

This training is in partnership with the Maryland Health Care Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
 In the "Intimate Partner Violence and Pregnancy" training, participants will learn about the negative health impacts of intimate partner violence (IPV) on pregnancy, how pregnancy can exacerbate circumstances for individuals who are already experiencing abuse in their relationships, and how to properly respond to IPV in an OBGYN setting. The training emphasizes a trauma-informed approach using an intersectional lens.

 Responding to Non-Fatal Strangulation Response
4 hour training (can be reduced based on request)

This training is for First Responders, Legal Professionals, and Victim Advocates. The training includes a discussion of best practices for victim advocacy, criminal investigation and prosecution, as well as the importance of early medical intervention. Community resources for victims of strangulation are also provided.

 


Teen Dating Violence

 Expect Respect (for teens)
45 minutes
This workshop for youth ages 12 – 18 provides information on what healthy, unhealthy and abusive relationships are, what the warning signs are and how to help a friend. Consent is also addressed. Teen dating violence resources available in Montgomery County will also be shared.
There are separate workshops based on grade level: 6th Grade, 7th Grade, 8th Grade and High School.

 A Parent’s Guide to Teen Dating Violence
60 minutes
This training for parents provides an introduction to what dating violence is, the statistics related to teenagers, warning signs and how to talk to a teenager about relationships. Dating violence resources available in Montgomery County will also be shared.

60 minutes
This training for youth serving professionals who directly work with young people provides an introduction to what dating violence is, the statistics related to teenagers, warning signs and how to talk to a teenager about relationships.
