Signs and Markings

Street signs are essential to our roadways, guiding drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians to ensure smooth and safe traffic flow. These signs provide critical information such as speed limits, directions, warnings, and regulations that help prevent accidents and reduce congestion. By managing over 400,000 street signs, the Department of Transportation’s Division of Traffic Engineering and Operations plays a vital role in maintaining public safety and the overall efficiency of the transportation network.

In addition to managing street signs, this division maintains more than 600 centerline miles of long-line pavement markings, including double yellow centerlines, lane lines, and edge lines. These markings are crucial for defining lanes, guiding motorists, and enhancing road safety, especially in low-visibility conditions. The division also maintains nearly 6,000 crosswalks and short-line markings, such as stop bars, arrows, and bike lane symbols, essential for safe pedestrian crossings and clear traffic guidance. By keeping these elements in optimal condition, the division supports safe and orderly movement of all road users.
