Awning and Canopy Permits Permit & Inspection Process
A Public Right of Way Permit is required to install a new or to modify an existing residential or commercial awning or canopy that extends into a Montgomery County maintained right of way. This includes sidewalks. The permit ensures Montgomery County requirements are followed. A Commercial Building Permit is also required if the awning or canopy will be attached to a structure.
If the proposed work impacts a roadside tree, a permit for tree trimming or removal may be needed. When the proposed work is within an arterial roadway (80’ right of way width or greater) or within a Central Business District and/or needs sidewalk closure, the applicant must submit a site specific Temporary Traffic Control Plan(TTCP) to be approved by the Montgomery County Department of Transportation. Additional reviews may be needed if the proposed work conflicts with other County facilities/ features such as traffic signs, street lights, etc. A Commercial Building Permit is also required if the awning or canopy will be attached to a structure.
Typically, a permit will be issued within one week from submittal depending on DPS staff workload.
A scalable plan showing the proposed awning or canopy or modifications to an existing awning or canopy and associated details will need to be provided. When submitting electronically you will need to meet the ePlans submittal requirements for Miscellaneous Permits.
