Private Road Closure Permit & Inspection Process
A private road closure permit is required to temporarily close any portion of a private road, including adjacent sidewalks, that is also considered an urban road. This includes closures to accommodate special events, reconstruction, resurfacing, repairs or other general maintenance. The permit ensures the closure does not violate fire safety standards, hinder emergency vehicle accessibility and that safe pedestrian passage is provided for the duration of the closure. It also ensures proper traffic control devices are in place and that connecting public roads are not adversely affected.
If the proposed private road closure impacts a public road, a traffic control plan approval will be required from the Department of Transportation. Also, Fire Marshal approval is required to make sure emergency vehicular access is provided.
A scalable plan showing the proposed road closure location, temporary traffic control plan and emergency vehicle access routes. When submitting electronically you will need to meet the ePlans submittal requirements for Miscellaneous Permits.
Typically, the permit will be issued within one to two weeks from submittal depending on staff workload. Additional time may be needed if an approved traffic control plan from the Department of Transportation is needed.
