May 2, 2024- Effective immediately, Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center (MCASAC) is closed to the public due to a confirmed case of Canine Influenza Virus (CIV) in one of our dogs. The shelter will be closed for an indefinite period to help contain the outbreak.

Canine influenza is a contagious respiratory disease in dogs. While it does not affect humans, it spreads through respiratory droplets and contaminated surfaces, posing a risk to dogs in close contact.

For safety, MCASAC will remain closed until further notice. We are only accepting essential intakes, such as sick or injured animals and those posing a threat to public safety to prevent new cases and protect the animals in care.

If you find a lost pet, please refrain from bringing them to the shelter. Instead, visit our " Found a Pet" page for tips and consider fostering the animal until the owner is located.

Symptoms of canine influenza include cough, runny nose, fever, and lethargy. If your dog shows signs, contact your vet immediately. Vaccination is recommended, especially if your dog frequents shared spaces like dog parks or daycare. Take precautions by limiting contact with other dogs, avoiding shared toys and dishes, and staying informed about local outbreaks. Your vigilance can help protect your dogs and the dogs in your community!
