EVERYONE COUNTS IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY! All United States residents must be counted, including citizens and those residents who are not citizens.
Every 10 years, the federal government conducts a population count of everyone in the United States.
- It determines how many representatives each state gets in Congress.
- Communities rely on census statistics to plan for a variety of resident needs including new roads, schools, and emergency services.
- County agencies, businesses, and non-profits all use census data to inform planning decisions that help provide more services, local jobs, and potentially better places to shop.
Each year, the federal government distributes hundreds of billions of dollars to states and communities based on U.S. Census Bureau data. In 2020, new technology will be introduced to make it easier than ever to respond to the census. For the first time, you will be able to respond online, by phone, or by mail.
Census data is also used to determine the level of federal funding for programs such as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for Women, Infants and Children (SNAP/WIC), Medicaid, Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and highway and transportation projects.
- Every year, the federal government allocates more than $675 Billion in funding based on census data.
- Every Marylander not counted costs the state approximately $18,250 over 10 years – this equates to the state losing $26.6 Billion (based on historical U.S. Census undercount).
- Census data is used to plan new homes and businesses and improve neighborhoods.
